Liquid Resize Public Beta - Update 1/31/2008

Well, here we are in the waning hours of January 2008 and there's no beta of Liquid Resize like we said we would in our press release dated 1/17/08. There's not a whole lot to say other than we don't have anything that we can post for you to download, so please be patient. We'll get it to you as soon as we can.

Thanks for understanding.

Photoshop User TV goes on national TV

I was reading Scott Kelby's blog this morning and saw the news that Photoshop User TV will be going on "Real TV" starting next Tuesday night on the Fox Business News Channel.

Congratulations Scott, Matt and Dave!

My favorite part of Scott's blog entry is this:

"I don't want you to think for one moment that just because we're on real TV now, that the show will get any better..."

Here's a link to the whole entry which includes a link to the Fox Business Channel site.

John Woodward Seminar by PrairieFire Productions

I just got an email from one of our best partners, Steve Herzberg at PrairieFire Productions, letting me know about an upcoming seminar on March 1st and 2nd of 2008. The seminar is with John Woodward and it sounds like they've got a great two full days of information planned - and it's only $350. Here's what the schedule has on the agenda.

Day 1
Composition
Control
Getting Enhanced Dynamic Range
Picking Our Tools Wisely (lenses, lights)
Portraits
Portraits in the Studio
Lighting Things

Day 2
Lighting the Woodward Way (high key, low key, glamour, cup, etc)
Adding Drama and Impact
Putting it to Work
Finished Products

About John Woodward
John received the Photographer of the Year award from the Professional Photographers of America at the national convention this year. As a double honor, he was the recipien of the ASP's Educational Associate as well (which has only been received by 37 people in the 70 year history of the organization!).

John has been a working professional for 38 years and his clients include Chase, Citibank, Paramount, Cunnard, RJR Nabisco, Viacom, Hyatt and Marriott. He has photographed Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones not to mention photographing five Presidents, the Pope, the Dalai Lama and several First Ladies.

If that's not enough, he was also the Official Photographer for the New York Yankees (hey John, can you hook me up with some tickets?!) for six seasons.

Bottom line, you're getting the opportunity to learn from one of the great photographers/teachers around.

The seminar will be held at the PrairieFire Productions studio in Houston, Texas so if you're in the area, definitely consider going. For more information, visit the PrairieFire site.

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 by Scott Kelby

digitalphotographybookv2.jpg

I recently got Scott Kelby's update to his best-selling book The Digital Photography Book (this one is Volume 2) and I've got to tell you that it's the best $19.99 (or $14.99 if you're a NAPP member) that you can spend to get:

1. A good resource of recommended equipment to buy at three price levels (budget, moderate, and money is no object).

2. A good resource of general photography information written in a down to earth, fun and witty style.

It usually takes me forever to read a book. If you could see the last book I read, you'd see that about every three pages is dog-earred where I stopped reading. With Scott's latest The Digital Photography Book, I blasted through the entire book, cover to cover (okay, I didn't read the index, but everything else) in one sitting on my way from Portland to San Francisco for Macworld. I even read it again in more detail on the way home focusing on the parts that were of particular interest to me.

If you enjoy any of Scott's other books, you'll like this one. If you're not sure, head over to Borders or Barnes and Nobel and I'm sure you could leaf through it and know in short order if you'll like it or not.

Genuine Fractals and Liquid Resize

You may have seen our press announcement yesterday about our acquisition of the Liquid Resize technology developed by Austrian developer Sabet Ramin which as in turn based on the paper issued at Siggraph 2007.

I've gotten a few emails and phone calls since then asking what impact this will have on Genuine Fractals. The short answer is that this won't have an impact on Genuine Fractals.

Here's the longer answer...

The two technologies, while both involve resizing, are quite different.

Genuine Fractals is designed for those who want to increase the size of a file to get a higher resolution file for printing purposes and to maintain the aspect ratio of the original file.

The technology in Liquid Resize, on the other hand is meant for when you want to resize a digital image and change the aspect ratio of the image, but not distort the image. I'll post some examples of Liquid Resize in the next couple of days, but in the meantime, I hope this answers the question for most people.

Macworld 2008

Fresh off of the Imaging USA show last week in Tampa (by the way, thanks to everybody who stopped by our booth!) I'm down at Macworld Expo 2008 this week for a couple of days presenting in the Xtrain booth teaching a couple of Photoshop classes.

When I wasn't teaching, I tried to spend some time over in the Apple booth checking out the new MacBook Air and the Apple TV. To me, I think the Apple TV is the more appealing of the two. Don't get me wrong, the MacBook Air is pretty amazing - I can't believe they got everything they did into that small of a space, and the display is fantastic (Steve Jobs isn't kidding when he said they didn't compromise on that). But for my use, I think the MacBook Pro that I have works great. Sure, I travel, more than some and less than others, but for a few hundred dollars more, I get more computer with a MacBook Pro.

For the Apple TV, this is the version that is truly appealing to me. Being able to sit on my couch and renting a movie and have it start quickly is pretty cool. The demos at the show today were pretty compelling - especially on the Pioneer plasma TVs they had. So for $229 for the Apple TV and about $180 for the Airport Extreme, that seems pretty cool since it also gives you what might be the best way to watch other movies/tv shows/pictures and listen to iTunes music on your Mac in your house. I think I've gotta get this.

US Department of Transport announces restrictions for Li-Ion batteries

Dan Harlacher, the senior product manager here at onOne Software just sent me an email as we're all gearing up to go to Tampa this weekend for Imaging USA (stop by and see us in booth 639 if you're at the show).

The Department of Transportation has recently updated some restrictions on flying with Li-Ion batteries. You can read the story over at dpreview.com here.
