Wow. I am completely amazed and excited at the feedback we’ve gotten over our DSLR Remote iPhone app for Canon EOS DSLR cameras. I’d like to thank all of you who have left comments or linked back to the article. We appreciate hearing from you. I’d like to try to consolidate all of the questions posted in the comments into a brief (if possible) FAQ here to make it easier for you to find the information you’re looking for. Much of this will be a repeat of what I’ve responded to in the comments for the two original posts (here and here).
Do you have an email list that I can sign up for to be notified when the DSLR Remote app is available through iTunes?
The best way to get an update is to check back here to the One onOne Blog or subscribe to the RSS feed. I do have a list of everybody who has left a comment or contacted me so I’ll try to get a bulk email out as well, but the fastest way to be notified is going to be through the RSS feed. Additionally, I will post something via Twitter so if you’re on Twitter you can follow me (@therealmikewong) and get updated that way too.
Is the DSLR Remote app approved yet? When will it be? When can I buy it in the iTunes App Store? When will the companion software be ready for download?
As of May 21, 2009, the DSLR Remote app has not yet been approved by Apple. We’ve submitted everything that they have asked for so we’re assuming that it is sitting in their approval queue. Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly when it will be live, but I’m told we will be getting a 24-hour notice before it goes live. When I know, you’ll know.
The companion software is currently completed and ready for download. We just haven’t posted it yet because it really won’t do you any good unless you have the app on your iPhone or iPod Touch. [ {1} ] As soon as the app is in the iTunes store, we’ll make the links to download the server software available on our website.
What is this Server Software and what does it do? Will run on a Mac OS and Windows OS computer? Will it run on an iPod Touch or iPhone? Is it hard to set up?
The DSLR Remote Server Software is a lightweight application that runs on your Mac or Windows computer. The DSLR Remote app that runs on the iPhone talks to the server software which in turn talks to the camera and tells it what to do. It all happens very quickly too. You make a change to the shutter speed, aperture or white balance on the iPhone and click the Fire button and the camera fires as soon as you let go of the Fire button.
The server software only runs on a Mac or Windows computer. It’s a great idea that several of you have suggested for making it run on the iPhone but for the time being it needs to run on a laptop or desktop.
To set it up, you just launch the app on your computer. The DSLR Remote app running on your iPhone will then find it over the WIFI network.
What about support for Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony cameras?
While version 1.0 of the DSLR Remote app only supports select Canon EOS DSLR cameras, a Nikon version is not out of the question. I talked to a friend of mine at Nikon today and he’s provided us with the necessary SDK (software development kit) to allow us to support Nikon cameras. Which ones, I don’t know yet as I haven’t had a chance to talk to our developers about that. They’re busy on another project, but projects do get moved around sometimes.
Rest assured Nikon shooters, we know you’re interested and are taking the feedback very seriously. As for Olympus, Pentax and Sony, it would be good to hear from more of you so if you fall into one of those camps and want this app to support those cameras, please spread the word and have them leave a comment.
Does the camera have to be tethered to the computer? Can you connect the camera directly to the iPhone running OS 3.0?
Yes, you need to have the camera connected to the computer running the server software in one of three ways.
- Via USB cable.
- Via Firewire cable.
- Via Canon Wireless File Transmitter.
Please see the server software comments above for the reasons why.
Can I control the focus of AF lenses through this app?
Not in version 1.0. We’ll look at doing this in an update.
Can I start and stop video on the Canon 5D Mark II?
Not in version 1.0. We’ll look at doing this in an update.
The cameras listed as being supported only list the U.S. names. What about the international versions of these cameras? Can you list them too?
Sure thing. I apologize for not doing that originally. Here is a complete list of supported cameras in the DSLR Remote version 1.0:
- EOS-1D Mark II
- EOS 20D
- EOS-1Ds Mark II
- EOS Kiss Digital N/350D/Rebel XT
- EOS 5D
- EOS-1D Mark II N
- EOS 30D
- EOS Kiss Digital X/400D/Rebel XTi
- EOS-1D Mark III
- EOS 40D
- EOS-1Ds Mark III
- EOS Digital Rebel Xsi/450D/Kiss X2
- EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D/KISS F
- EOS 50D
- EOS 5D Mark II
I have the Canon Rebel T1i and the software that came with it allows me to do remote capture. Why isn’t this camera listed as being supported when it is so new?
The currently available Canon SDK does not support the Canon Rebel T1i so unfortunately, we don’t support it either. It’s not uncommon for an SDK to be slightly behind the software that ships with a newer camera like the T1i. So for now, we don’t support it, but if that camera makes it into the SDK, we’ll get check it out.
Whew. That was a lot. If you have more questions, please feel free to leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks again for your interest and patience!

thanks for all this great info!

Remote activation of HD video on the 5D Mk II would be huge, especially if it were incorporated with the intervalometer of time lapse movies.
This APP is HUGE. Thanks!

Really looking forward to seeing this app. Great application of the technology. One of the biggest downsides to the Canon DSLR system is the buggy software – it’s all but useless. This should take care of that.
That said, you reaaaaaallly need to add the video start/stop, and the focusing ability. Then the app/phone will become the monitor/remote application of choice for everyone short of the big-budget filmmakers.

I looked at he Canon Web site for info on the SDK for the T1i Camera and could not find it. How often do you look for it or ask Canon for it. I sure would like to have the remote iPhone program for the Rebel T1i.

I just bought DSLR remote and when I launch the server on my XP-64 it simply says “No camera detected”. Yet my 5D MII is attached to the computer. Whenever I attach it, Digital Still Camera dialog comes up asking which program to launch for this action and lists Photoshop, Word, and MS scanner and camera wizard. No matter which of those I choose, DSLR Remote still to say No Camera detected. The Quick Start section of the DSLR Remote manual says that upon launching the app I should see “the dialog below” but there is no dialog below in the manual, so I don’t know what you are referring to. It also says to confirm that my camera is listed but no list ever appears, probably because of the “No camera detected” problem. By the way, my iPod Touch running the DSLR Remote remote shows XP 64 under Camera Servers but selecting it does nothing, probably I am guessing because of the root problem, “No Camera detected”. I don’t know where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Hello again,
installation is now okay. The problem was a running anti-virus software. But now i have the problem that the server-software doesn´t start, it wants a new installation, because the software is wrong configured.
I´m afraid i did some double-posting. Is this the right blog for my problems?

I’m holding my money in my hand, would you like it? Looks great, only thing I would ask is there anyway to switch to manual focus through the software? Sometimes I do low light shooting and after catching the right focal length/depth of field etc i would like to switch to manual so it doesn’t want to try and focus each time. Please advise, great work.

@john: We want to add support to the T1i as soon as we can. The SDK hasn’t been released to third-party developers yet. A couple of people here in the office have that camera too and are in the same boat as you. As soon as we can, we’ll add this as an update. Thanks for your patience.

Wow, thanks for an awesome integration of my iPhone and Camera! I am all for the proposed additional features spoken about above, and would like to add my own request…
I would like to access the Meta Data of the photos saved; applying Geotagging with my iPhone’s Cell Station GPS info, and editable Image File Naming & Keywording!
I would like to be able to type in a File Name with a sequencer for numbering the files and to be able to input and select a set of keywords.
But that’s not all….
What would be truly awesome is to be able to use voice recognition thru the iPhone (like Google Search does) to apply all of the Meta Data!!
Thanks again for a great piece of software!

Using the Canon 1Ds Mk III tethered to a MacBook laptop with CS4 and OSX 10.5.7, I had a wonderful initial test run. When I reviewed the images I was shooting however, I came across the discovery that my camera defaulted to sRGB color space when it was accessed by the DSLR remote. Is there anyway to keep the settings from my camera (Adobe RBG) from changing? The other thing it did was take me off of RAW shooting and set it to Large JPEG, which was obvious enough through the interface. Wish the initial connection would start off with the current camera settings. Excited to see this come together! Thanks.

Hi Folks,
Love the DSLR software with my Canon 5D Mark II.
I used your software for some time-lapse work today after downloading yesterday. Everything worked as advertised.
I’d like to second the idea of starting and stopping video with your software, as well as adding support for the +/- functionality.
Also, I’d use an override to the camera in intervalometer mode. In other words, I’d like to be able to manually shoot frames IN ADDITION to those timed in the settings, without canceling out of the intervalometer sequence. Others might want a pause and resume of an intervalometer session.
I’d also like to see you add a function that keeps the DSLR Remove Server application at the front-most position. When using a high-end Macbook Pro today, the iPhone lost contact with the server if the application window stayed behind other running applications. If this were a preference, users could have the option to manage that functionality.
Keep up the great work!

DSLR remote is so close to being “just right” that it is killing me! I shoot video – for low angles I need a remote viewfinder. THe HDMI option is too big and clunky – I’m not about to buy yet another monitor when the DSLR option is so close to working flawlessly.
I see in 1.1 you’ll have an option to begin recording from the iphone – great!. In the meantime I can’t even start recording from the camera when I have DSLR remote running. How about a 1.0.5 to address that?
Tethering the iphone to the camera via usb would be perfect – I don’t need to be more than my charging cable distance from the camera, I just need to be able to twist the iphone so I can see the picture.
Please make it so! I’d buy a dedicated Ipod touch if you could make it work as a real viewfinder in live mode.

@Denis OKeefe:
Hi Denis, just to clarify, we’re hoping to be able to get the start/stop video recording functionality into version 1.1, but it may not happen. We are, to some degree, limited with what we can do based on what is available to us in the SDK from each camera manufacturer.

I would love it if you could build in Oly support. I have numerous photo apps that I use with the iPhone camera. It would be awesome to use my iPhone as another tool with my E-500 or my E-510. The idea of being able to use one tool to enhance the other is sublime.

Hi,
I recently purchase the DSLR remote. I seem to have a problems with the DSLR remote server detecting my Nikon D90 and constantly getting the “no camera detected” error message. I’m running Windows Xp64 pro platform and really lost now how I should resolve this issue.
I tried various methods like installing the latesting camera control pro 2.6 and looking for NEF raw 64 codec which is unavailable and not supported for xp 64.
Need expert advise badly.

I am a Pro Shooter trying to find out if one of my old canon’s like my 20D or 5D will work with stop motion software for my grandson. After reading all of the comments I walk away shaking my head trying to understand if One onOne is a stop motion program. You can shoot tethered to programs like Adobe Light Room V 2.5 and Capture One Pro which is what I use. It seems to me that the main issue is that you must use a DSLR that shoots HD video. But, then again I’m not entirely sure at this point. I have a remote for firing all of my Canon’s and don’t care about interacting with an IPhone or whatever. Just from reading the comments it appears that the One onOne simply isn’t finished yet and should be a BETA version. But, what do I know.

I tried the lite version & it works fine with my Nikon D5000. I’d love to see AF control, video start/stop and server on iPhone before I buy the full version. For future development, I suggest to make it truly wireless by enabling server on an Eye-Fi SD card. I love DSLR remote & I love Eye-Fi Pro, but both together would just be perfect!
