I am happy to share with you that onOne Software’s newest product, the DSLR Camera Remote Control for the iPhone and iPod Touch is now available for immediate purchase via the iTunes App Store.
As previously discussed, the DSLR Camera Remote Control for iPhone will be available in two versions.
- DSLR Camera Remote Control Lite – click here to view in the iTunes App Store [ {1} ]
- DSLR Camera Remote Control Professional Edition – click here to view in the iTunes App Store [ {2} ].
Don’t forget if you purchase either edition, you still need to download the free companion Server Software from the onOne Software website here.
What about Nikon Support?
For all of you who are Nikon shooters who told us again and again that you wanted support as well, I’ve got good news for you – we will be adding support for Nikon DSLRs as well which will be available in an update to the app in the very near future. A special thank you goes out to some good friends at Nikon who were kind enough to send some cameras and accessories out to us today for testing. We expect to get the Nikon DSLR cameras in our office tomorrow and we’ll begin testing. Stay tuned to this blog for the most up-to-date info on when the Nikon support will be available.
Thanks for your patience everybody. If you do purchase the app from the iTunes store, please be sure to let us know what you think. We already have some great ideas and suggestions from many of you on what to include in an update but would love to continue to hear from you on what you’d like to see.

This is AHHHHHH-MAZING!

Just bought, downloaded and played with this. VERY NICE!!
Have you considered partnering with the folks at eyefi to make this work with their wifi /sdcards? (the 2gb ones will work with a cf adapter) This could be awesome. Especially if you could save the photos to the phone, add meta and upload to flickr using it’s 3g (aka i could use my dslr for moblogging)

Great. I’ve downloaded an tried it out quickly. Here’s some feedback:
- wonderful to see the liveview feed – that make’s it really worthwhile
- it found my local wireless network without needing anything other than starting the server – well done
- it hung the connection a few times and didn’t recover
- it doesn’t seem to AF on my 5DII when using C1 to change to Av-AF on shutter release. I normally have it set to AF on the * button, and C1 changes it back to the shutter button for when I hand the camera to someone else. It definitely didn’t AF in liveview in C1 on shutter release. It did with on-camera shutter release
- in the same situation immediately above, it under-exposed terribly even though I was in Av (and hence it should have auto-exposed for shutter speed) and same exposure mode with subject in the same position. One shot was 1/80 f/5.6 and the next was 1/200. No change in anything else, about 1s apart. Seemingly no reason…
Looking forward to trying it even more if I can work out liveview AF on-phone.

One problem when I use DSLR remote in tandem with Lightroom:
DSLR uses a watched folder, and displays the latest entry to this folder on my iPhone.
Great so far.
Lightroom also uses a watched folder, but as soon as something shows up in that folder Lightroom moves it to another folder.
Problem being, as soon as the image is moved, it disappears from my iPhone screen.
Not your fault, but it would be wonderful to have the latest image appear on the laptop as well as my iPhone.
It doesn’t seem to be possible to stop Lightroom from moving the image out of the watched folder.
Apart from that, brilliant!

This app is so cool. Currently controlling a Canon 5D Mark II for self portraits – to my 2007 Macbook Pro. Having a blast.
Firing shutter is instantaneous, LiveView is okay with negligible lag (within close distance <30 feet). File writing to camera and computer are pretty speedy (even with 23mb RAW files)! Using a RAW image software’s “watch folder” feature allow for image display and cataloging when I’m in the studio/field.
Remote camera triggering/intervalometer setup from this iPhone app is so much cooler than using Canon’s TC-80N3. Although I still would need the TC-80N3 to shoot untethered to computer. Also the TC-80N3 while expensive is much cheaper than using an iPhone+app and Laptop!
A few things I would like to see added though,
1. While I like the double tap “zoom in/out” feature, I wish I could pan around image when zoomed in.
2. Would like to review images while in LiveView mode. I understand you can’t display both live and recorded image at the same time. Maybe adding “playback” toggle button on the interface when in LiveView would work. This would work like the “play” button does on the camera.
3. I know it is wifi, but hoping for a little faster image display with swiping through images.
4. Multiple image deletion. Currently can only delete one at a time. At the very least, let me mark my “keepers” and delete the rest in bulk. (quick nod to the devs – when deleting apps on the iPhone they are deleted from cam and computer just as quickly as taking photos).
5. Geotagging of photos written to computer.
6. Autofocus (I know they’re working on it).
7. Image bracketing.
Thanks OnOne for this AWESOME app.

@Brendan: I just figured out a work around for you (and others) who are using a Mac and a Lightroom watched folder. It has to do with Folder Actions. First off thank you for all of your products, they really do make our jobs easier.
Second, thank you for the Nikon support, one additional request that I would like to make is that after the application is written for the Nikon iPhone I would like to see an application written for those of us that use Windows Mobile, I’m currently an HTC HD Touch Phone user that has win mobile 6.1 installed. I’m certain I’m not the only windows mobile user that would like to see this application made available.
Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Anyone had any luck connecting with an ad-hoc network? I can create one on my laptop and then “connect’ to it on my iphone, but the phone does not display the wi-fi connection on the home screen. Then when I launch the app, it does not see my computer.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

@Toby: ad-hoc networking worked fine for me (with macbook pro). There’s a tutorial vid on OnOne’s site for setting this up in Windows as well.
I did have to go into the iPhone’s settings and set/authenticate to the wifi to the ad-hoc connection. Once done, waited a few seconds, started DSLR Remote….it found server (macbook pro) without issue.
Hope this helps.

I FRIGGIN’ LOVE THIS APP!
The only addition I’d like to see is a shutter release half-press for autofocus. Maybe press “Fire” to focus, release it to fire?
One problem I seem to be running into is with Capture One 4. With my camera tethered, it keeps wanting to self-launch. And with C1 running I get a message saying “DSLR Remote couldn’t connect because the camera is busy.” Quitting C1 seems to fix the problem, but the two programs definitely don’t like each other.
Nitpicks aside, you guys rock!!

Pretty cool App, good work!
The App works fine with 5D Mk II, MBP and iMac but it would be more practicable if you would allow a simoultanesly connection to the EOS Utility, so the image could be also automatically displayed in a big size at the Canon’s DPP Software. Then it would be also possible to release the camera from both systems. Seems to be the same problem with the C1.
The other thing: I’m also using the 1D Mk III with the WFT-E2, is there any planning in recognizing the camera through wifi instead of USB? Would be awesome! It would work then also with the other WFT modules (E3, E4), the protocoll is quite the same.
Thanks,

Hey all!
Glad the app is here!
I bought the Pro version on the App Store, installed the server on my Windows XP, SP2 machine, installed and ran the server, but received the error attached. =(
I have a Canon 1DMK2.
iPhone sees the server, I choose the server, then error.
Any ideas?
I tried changing out USB cables and tried different laptops.
I made sure my camera wasn’t “sleeping” at the time as well.
Other than that, I can’t wait to use it!

DP, I had the same issue with the ” The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail” error.
You don’t specify if you are a Mac or PC user so I don’t know if this will help you or not, but I solved the problem by downloading and installing Microsoft Net Framework 3.5 on my netbook … and all was well.
I knew it wasn’t the server software because it worked fine on my laptop … just not on the netbook.

Even if one didn’t do it on an eyefi, but supported smaller handheld devices like the N8[10]0 series.
Hate to nudge the subject, but if there was a way to make the protocol open it would open up the use of the iPhone app to a lot more. =)

@Joseph Peila: We developed this app to Canon’s DSLR SDK. The G10 and others are not included in that. Those cameras have a completely different SDK and it is Windows only. Granted there are more Windows computers out there, but we try to do everything here in a cross platform environment. You’ve probably seen how many comments we’ve gotten for not including Nikon support out of the gate. Can you imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Mac support?
Thanks for the comments and glad you like the app!

@Pattie: Thanks for helping the community here with the comment! I can’t take much credit for the app other than being the messenger here. Our senior product manager Dan Harlacher had the idea first here. I just helped nurture it along to get it into development where one of our engineers did all the coding. On top of that, we had a QA engineer do all the testing. So it really was a team effort. I just played my part.
Thanks!

@Greg: We tested with the WFT-E4 and it worked fine. We didn’t test it with the E2 or the E3, but assuming that your WFT-E2 can talk to the computer that is running the Server Software, it should work. Just be sure to set it PTP mode and then use the camera wizard to connect to the access point. The pairing software needs to be on your host computer. Once the camera and computer pair up, start the Server Software app from onOne and you should be in business.

GREAT program. Love it already. Have you considered a Pro version of the server, that doesn’t require the iPhone to control? When it comes to bracketing, or sequencing shots, or especially with time lapse photos, a direct camera to computer interface would be ideal.

Hi,
Have had a couple of enjoyable sessions trying out DSLR Remote Pro, & am loving it. As a working photographer I can see myself using it as an aid to a client seeing what I’m shooting – start the app & hand them my iPhone. One feature I’d like to see implemented would be the ability to ignore the cameras ‘rotation’ settings & always display the image on the iPhone as a horizontal. This would utilise the screen size & when the user gets to understand the accelerometer on the iPhone they can preview the image at maximum image size. Thanks, and well done.

Mike,
This is a great program! Did you guys write the server program (I assume)? I’d *really* like to set this thing up at weddings, in places I can’t stand, like behind the alter – but I really don’t want to tie down a laptop (plus they’re kind of expensive!) Have you considered optimizing the server so it’ll run on a linux-based netbook or plug computer with 512MB RAM? (http://www.plugcomputer.org/) Or is such a thing even possible – I assume the video broadcast is what’s chewing up the memory?
Thanks,

We wrote the server program. The server software runs great on a small netbook. You can get them from Acer, Dell, et al for around $350 or so with a 160 GB hard drive to store all of the photos you’re taking along the way. No plans for a Linux version of the server. Just Mac & Win.

I don’t know why I always seem to choose the underdog.
I was a charter Mac user back in 1984, and waited for decades to be vindicated. Now, once again, evidently, I’m a second class citizen, having owned Nikon cameras and lenses for years, and am finding that I’ll have to wait for what otherwise looks like a pretty cool app. Recently, in one of my Photography classes, one of the students, a Canon user, said to me, “Well, Nikon is coming back.” I’m sooo tired of being patronized, even by my own (ignorant) students. And to you Canon users out there, and this goes out to the folks at OnOne too, who seem to think it’s more hip these days to have a Canon than a Nikon, I say you’re missing the point entirely, it’s the glass and the artistry that counts. And don’t expect me to say something nice about Canon either, just to be “fair,” like my stupid student, a rich kid who recently purchased an expensive Gibson Les Paul thinking that the guitar would make him a better player (he actually said this). Here’s the point: Onone made a value judgment, pure and simple, which ignored a very big portion of the artistic community. I’m not sure why you made that decision, but I have my suspicions, which I’ll keep to myself. If Nikon users aren’t hip enough, or Nikon itself isn’t hip enough, well, so be it. The joke’s on you if you actually think it’s the camera that makes the difference in your work. My apologies for this rant. Just hurry up and finish this app “for the rest of us.”

@Rod
Wow!
I really don’t like Canon cameras either, but the guys here actually stated that Canon are what they already use, why would they develop for anything else?
It was POSITIVE feedback from the community that got them to develop for Nikon so soon and I am pretty sure they saw some of the reasons why we love Nikon during that development.
You are right that it is not the camera that makes the artist so come down off your high horse and realise that the use of cameras made by a marketing company like Canon does not automatically turn their users into a bunch of drones who answer only to the Borg
BTW It is because of people like us, who appreciate value, that Market Share never has made Apple, Nikon, Audi, BMW etc. into underdogs.
Canon are like Ford, GM, VW, Fiat etc.
Good performance products available at an affordable price that are adequate for most people. Don’t knock those people for not realising arguably better value products are available for only slightly more money.
D300/50D Pro Build, Better W/proofing, 5 stops compensation, 9 step exposure bkting, superior customisation, intuitive superior focus system, built in iTTL
D3/5DMkII 1D build quality, Better W/proofing, many more than the 1 cross type focus sensor of the MKII (doesn’t matter how much resolution you have if you can’t get focus quickly enough)
D90/500D Similar to D500 with exception of build and w/proofing
D60/1000D Auto screen off, built in help system
18-200VR/18-200IS Focus window with distance scale, ability to be used cropped on full frame bodies
SB900/580EX Filter holder and diffuser included, easier wireless setup, intuitive menu
The above in no way makes Canon into bad products, just lower value in my opinion (others will have a different opinion – eg 5DMKII resolution matched only by Nikon d3X at 3x the price might be best value for a landscape photographer who doesn’t shoot in the rain and doesn’t require 9 step bracketing for HDR)

I can’t wait for the Nikon. I take pictures at small concert venues and this will allow me to put the camera backstage and shoot through the musicians towards the audience.
My only concern: do I need a phone signal? I have wifi in the computer, but this venue is out in the woods. No phone, no internet.

Saw the posts about using the eyefi SD wifi cards (using a CF adapter). I didn’t think Canon camera firmware allowed control of the camera through the CF port. If so, great idea! If not, then can the iPhone / iPod Touch USB port be configured as HOST mode? Then two iPhones (iPod Touches) could be used with one physically connected to the camera (USB adapter required) running the “receive” app while the hand held iPhone (iPod Touch) runs control app. A second iPod Touch at $230 would make a more portable set-up for some. This all assumes HOST mode supported which I don’t think any iPod supports, so maybe the next generation…..
I plan to get this app as soon as I get home today!

I don’t get it. You can already control your camera through your laptop. Why add another layer of tethering? Now if you could replace the laptop with the iPhone to shoot pics that would be remote shooting. Anyone?

I’d buy it if you decide to support the Sony Alpha series. It’s the perfect app for me. Normally I’d be shooting with a Nikon but a family member gave me a new A380 and I’m loving it so far.
Good luck on your product.. Very Cool!

@Juerg: I had the same problem. Turned out that he folder the photos are being saved to contained an ‘ä’ – so make sure there’s no other characters than a-z in the folder name!

Hi there. I just purchased your lite version and love it. I will be getting the pro as well very soon. I was wondering if there is any way to have the images save to your iPod Touch as well as your computer. Or how about just your iPod Touch?

I have a strange situation that I’m hoping someone can shed some light on.

Macbook Pro (Late 2008 – intel)- DSLR Server 1.1 – OS X 10.6.2 8gb
Two cameras (Canon 30D & Nikon D700) Everything works perfectly. – YAY!

Macbook (Early 2007 – intel) – DSLR Server 1.1 – OS X 10.6.2 8gb
Canon 30D works perfectly – YAY!
Nikon D700 doesn’t get recognized by the DSLR server software, just simply says: (Camera: No Camera Detected) as if the camera is unpluged- Boo!!!

The Nikon D700 works in iPhoto, get’s recognized in System Profiler and like I said above, works fine on the Macbook Pro.
Here’s what I tried:
I updated the Nikon Firmware to the latest (again, doubt it that, works on MBP)
I reinstalled OS X 10.6.2 Combo Update
I made a new user account and tried it under that.
Swapped out USB cable, Tried both USB ports, camera battery, with or without a CF card, computer on power cord and battery. (some silly and desperate, I know…)
Made sure there were no other camera control operations running in Activity Monitor, but then I doubt it as we’ve really only used iPhoto, Lightroom and at one point Aperture on this machine.
Can anyone think of anything else I can try or should I put in a new hard drive and really start from scratch? Ugh.
Here is a list of the processing running on the machine:

Referring to my previous post….
OK, I don’t know why it matters, but upgrading to 1.3 fixed the problem.
Thanks,
Brad
