Senior product manager Dan Harlacher sent me an update to the list of supported Canon DSLRs with our DSLR Camera Remote app. This is the official list as of June 12, 2009 and is broken out by type of connection.

Firewire Connection

  • 1D Mark II
  • 1Ds Mark II [ ((FYI, there is a bug in the 1Ds Mark II firmware that won't allow remote functions if the "quiet shutter" personal setting is turned on. If you're having problems, disable the quiet shutter and you should be good to go)) ]
  • 1D Mark II N

USB Connection

Your camera must be set to PC Connection and your Firmware must be up-to-date

  • Rebel XT/350D/Kiss Digital N
  • 20D
  • 5D

USB Connection

Your camera must be set to Print/PC (PTP) as the communication mode

  • Rebel XTi/400D/Kiss Digital X
  • Rebel Xsi*/450D*/Kiss X2*
  • Rebel XS*/1000D*/Kiss F*
  • 30D
  • 40D*
  • 50D*
  • 5D Mark II*
  • 1D Mark III*
  • 1Ds Mark III*

  1. It appears that the “quiet shutter” bug in the 1Ds (list above) also applies to the 40d. Disabling “silent shooting” in the Live View settings resolved my connection issues.

  3. I was just going over the instructions very quickly now and it ask’s the user to have a PC connection over USB Is there not support for Apple users as well?…

    Sean

  4. For Nikons It would be great if the App could work with WT-4 wireless transmitter

  5. Just got the new Canon SDK today. There is support in there for the T1i so you can expect to get that in the 1.1 update next month.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  6. @Alan Stewart:

The 500D / Kiss X3 / T1i (all the same camera) will be supported in the 1.1 update next month.

  7. @Sean Davey:

Sorry for the confusion. When it says “PC connection” it is not meant in the “Windows PC” nomenclature. The PC Connection is something that most of the camera manufacturers use in the generic “personal computer” phrase. Mac or Win. Apple users are indeed supported.

  8. Hi Mike,

Still cant resolve connection on 40D … thats because I cant find how to set the connection mode to “PTP ” mode ..despite searching menus, manuals and google on line …. any chance you guys can post a link showing the how to ?? Thanks… Brian

  9. HowTo Solve the “busy” Issue on Canon EOS DSLR!

Goto Cam Menu > Connection > SET TO NORMAL (instead of PPD)

    thats it, have fun!
