I recently picked up a new toy – the Canon EF 135mm f/2L lens. My good buddy Rick had loaned me his for a weekend a while back and ever since I’ve been lusting after it and wanting to get my own. And now that I do, I find myself wanting to shoot in more low light situations where I might have avoided them in the past.
So last night as the sun was setting, I went outside with my 5D Mark II, the 135mm f/2L and my tripod and shot some photos along with this short little video. Nothing fancy. Just having a little fun with the depth of field and thought I’d share it with you here.
Nothing fancy. Just a fun depth-of-field experiment with my Canon 5D Mark II and my new Canon EF 135mm f/2L lens that I just bought.
Shot at 9:15 pm. ISO at 3200. Aperture priority mode set at f/2.

It is like a moving object, great example of depth of field for video and still camera

What’s the point of buying and carrying an expensive very fast
lens AND using a tripod?
(i know it’s a silly comment, but the picture isn’t showing in my browser, so i can’t comment on it)

@Marcello: I can think of several reasons actually, at least for me. Others may differ in their opinions, but… 1. There are times when I want the picture to be as sharp as possible and if the camera is moving at all (i.e. hand held) you can lose some of that sharpness. On a tripod, I’m minimizing that movement as much as possible. 2. For video, there’s nothing worse than a shaky picture and in this video that I posted there’s no way I could have kept the camera steady AND adjusted the focus of the lens for a minute.
