Rob Galbraith's Review of DSLR Camera Remote version 1.1

July 28, 2009 by Mike Wong • 12 Comments

Most of you have already seen this I suspect, but in case you haven't, we made a pre-release version of our upcoming DSLR Camera Remote 1.1 available to Rob Galbraith and true to form, he ran it through it's paces and wrote up the most complete and thorough review that I've seen so far.

"The upcoming free update is about more than just bringing Nikon users in from the cold. It also introduces just enough vital changes to transform DSLR Camera Remote from a curiosity into a useful tool."

If you are interested in DSLR Camera Remote v1.1 for the iPhone and haven't read this review already, you owe it to yourself to do so. Not only does the review go in-depth on the current (and soon to be publicly implemented) features and point out some areas where we can improve the software in the future (better integration with a PocketWizard setup for example), but Rob has posted some great example shots of using the app with a camera in studio as well as mounted to a shot clock in a basketball game.

  1. Is there any chance down the road this program will be released for cameras not running the apple OS?

$900 for the 8gb 3G phone for us here locally… but LOTS of other options running on the the 850mhz GSM edge system… just not apple based :)

  2. @ Dennis:
On1 can correct me is I state this incorrectly, but from the laptop connected to the camera perspective, you can use a Mac or a PC. From the portable device perspective, I believe both the iPhone and the iTouch are supported (connecting to the PC/Mac using Wi-Fi), so you don’t need to lay down the cash for a more expensive iPhone or phone plan, just pick up an iTouch (and you get to play movies and music with it too :-) . You should be able to pick up a 4GB Gen 1 iTouch for pretty cheap these days. Yes, it still has an Apple OS, but much cheaper than the iPhone.

  3. OK….I (read that as a frustrated Nikon user) have been excited about version 1.1 for over a month. When can the rest of us expect to be able to find it on the app store???

  4. @Dennis: @David is correct in that both the iPhone and the iPod Touch are supported as long as either are running the iPhone OS 2.2.1 or higher.

BTW – where are you that a 8GB 3G iPhone is $900? Ouch. That is mighty pricey. :-(

  5. @Ted: See this blog entry. We’re working as fast and as hard as we can on getting it done to submit to the iTunes App Store for their approval process which can take between 2 days and 2 weeks depending on their backlog of apps to review and approve.

  6. Hey Mike,

I’ve been using your photoshop plugin’s and LR presets for a while now, so I know this is going to be great. You have a history of getting if right, so take your time.

The one question asked several times that keeps getting ignored is: Are the Nikon users going to get a discount like the Cannon guys did? I’m getting it, that’s a given, just don’t want to get it the day before you announce the Nikon price!

keep up the well thought out work.

  7. Mike,
I own most of your products and they are great (they make it look like I know what I am doing)!!! I agree, take your time and get it right….but hurry. I can’t wait to hook up my Nikon.

  8. @David

hmmm…. now you have me thinking… touch you say… might be just the ticket :)

    @Mike

Our local cell provider just made the change to the GSM Edge (in coherts with Rodgers) network so all our CDMA phones hit the trash bin within the month. I almost fell over when I saw what they wanted for the IPhone… This progie was one of the reasons I was even thinking of it compared to a HTC, Nokia, etc… but wayyy wayy out of the price range for a toy :)

  9. Hey, agree that testing the app is a good thing and that it shouldn’t be released until its ready. I also assume you will let everyone know when you actually submit it to the AppleStore (even if it could be several weeks before we see it there), as we’re all looking forward to seeing it progress towards official release!!

  10. So does the release (submission to Apple) feel like it is “just around the corner”, like any day now, or have enough issues come up during testing that you know it is at least a week off? Take all the time you need, I am just trying to determine if I should be checking here multiple times a day, or if I should give it a rest and not check back for a few days or a few weeks. The anticipation is killing me :-)

  11. The Nikon D2Xs is not in your list. Is this an oversight or will it not work with your app?
