Plug-In Suite 4.5 and Snow Leopard

Update 9/16/09 - see important update note below...

We've received several emails and phone calls to our Tech Support here in Portland, Oregon since last Friday about the onOne Plug-in Suite not working with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). I've also noticed many similar tweets on Twitter. The reports vary from receiving messages that the Suite is already activated or has exceeded the number of allowed activations to reports of Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop CS4 crashing upon launching after installing Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). If you're having trouble or are considering upgrading to Snow Leopard, please keep reading...

You Have Already Upgraded to Snow Leopard and are Having Problems

If you are an existing Plug-In Suite 4.5 user and have already upgraded to Snow Leopard and didn't happen to deactivate your Plug-In Suite first, here's the solution to get you back up and running again.

  1. Save any work in any open applications and then close those applications.
  2. Please download the latest Plug-In Suite 4.5 License Manager here. Update 9/16/09: There is an updated License Manager available now.
  3. Once you have downloaded the License Manager, extract the files and proceed to step 4.
  4. Launch the License Manager you just downloaded and extracted.
  5. After launching the License Manager, close the application.
  6. Next, launch Photoshop and open any image.
  7. Once  your image is open, launch one of the plug-ins. You may have to open each plug-in that you have installed, but this should fix the problem.

You Haven't Upgraded to Snow Leopard But Plan To

If you haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard yet, but are planning to, be sure that you DEACTIVATE your onOne plug-ins BEFORE you upgrade your operating system. This is especially important if you install Snow Leopard on a new hard disk and then use the Mac OS X Migration Assistant to take a previously installed OS to copy your files to your new Snow Leopard install.

To deactivate the Plug-In Suite, follow these steps.

  1. Launch Photoshop and open an image.
  2. Open one of the plug-ins included in the Plug-In Suite, FocalPoint for example.
  3. Go to the Help menu and choose Deactivate.
  4. Follow the prompts in the dialog box that follows.

After your Snow Leopard install, you can then activate the plug-ins again from within Photoshop and all should be good again.

UPDATE 9/16/09 @ 4:51 PM PST - Important note for Plug-In Suite 4.0.0 through 4.5.0

If you have Plug-In Suite 4.0.0 through version 4.5.0, be sure to update to version 4.5.1. Doing so will help avoid messages that the license manager doesn't work. You can update to Plug-In Suite 4.5.1 here.

UPDATE 9/16/09 @ 9:27 PM PST - UPDATED LICENSE MANAGER FOR SUITE 4.5.1 USERS AVAILABLE

There is an updated version of the License Manager now available if you have Plug-In Suite 4.5.1. Read this tech note in our Knowledge Base on how to download it and install it.

  1. Hi Mike

thanks for posting this. I have also read of the issues, waiting for my copy of SL to show up (I am missionary living in Russia so someone is bringing me my upgrade)…

So you are saying, that I will not have these crash issues if I first deactivate my plugins?

    Sounds simple enough!

    Thanks!

  2. Thanks for the solution. I thought I was going crazy with Mask 4.1 crashing everytime since the upgrade. This is a big weight off of my shoulders.

  3. Thanks for the info, but unfortunately this did not fix my SL issues. All onOne plugins crash upon running and take down CS4 with it.

  4. @Ken Z: Yes, if you deactivate first then upgrade your OS and then re-activate you shouldn’t have any problems. Thanks!

  5. Thank you for posting this – it fixed my problems! Mask Pro and PhotoFrame were making Photoshop crash before this fix. Thanks again!

  6. I just wanted to Thank you and your staff for solving the technical issues of the on one plug in’s so quickly. I’m running CS3 and with the on one suite 4.5 and was getting frustrated that CS3 would crash. I did the license down load and it has solved the Snow leopard up grade issue. Feeling much better! Thanks again for your great support.

  7. PHOTOFRAME BATCH NOT WORKING…!

    PHOTOFRAME BATCH NOT WORKING…!

    Help Please…..

  8. Hi Mike,

When I launch FocalPoint I get the message ‘This plug in is registered on another computer’ … but it isn’t; any ideas? This is only happening since updating to Snow Leopard.

    Thanks in advance,
    Glyn ;o)

  9. hey! works perfect now. I downloaded plug in suite and then downloaded snow leopard and didn’t realize that it wasn’t me screwing things up. Been driving me nuts for the last two days

  10. Sorry, but this is disappointing.

I followed the instructions to the letter, (being one of those who had already installed Snow Leopard without deactivating my plug-in suite), and the problem seemed to be solved. I used PS CS3 and PhotoTools, etc., a dozen or so times with no crashes…

But, then, the next time I booted up and used PS CS3 with PhotoTools, etc., (as well as every time since), PS has crashed after just one or two uses of the plug-in suite.

Please post a reliable fix a.s.a.p. as this is getting so frustrating.

    Thanks for your help.

    Sincerely,

    Chris Spracklen

  11. Tried the steps outlined on this blog post, and I am able to launch PhotoTools w/Photoshop CS4 without crashes. However, when using PhotoTools with Aperture, it seems to work fine until the very last part of the process when it tries to import the edited photo from Photoshop into Aperture. I then get a -47 error “Could not complete the operation due to an error.” This only started happening after updating to SnowLeopard, and this blog post doesn’t seem to correct it.

  12. @Chris Spracklen: I’ll ask the tech support team to see if they’ve seen this as well and if they have any other ideas. The best way for you to get this resolved though would be to contact tech support using this form if the steps above didn’t work for you.

  13. I tried the license manager approach but find it crashes every time I try it. This is part of the crash thread:

    Oh, dear!

  14. If you are experiencing crashing at launch with any of the plugins we will need to send you updated License Managers for your particular product. The support section of our website has a Snow Leopard Hot Topics page where we have posted the latest version of the License Manager for the Plugin Suite 4.5.1.

Typically downloading then opening and closing the License Manager will rewrite the problematic license table and you should be able to launch the plugin without further crashing.

In some instances we have seen that we actually have to replace the dylib files from the license manager into the plugins themselves.

You should contact technicalsupport@ononesoftware.com if you are experiencing continual crashing.

  15. when i try to open the license manager, i get a message that says the file is damaged or incomplete. this is so frustrating.

  16. Hi – I have been in touch with the Technical Support team and they are trying hard to help. So far though, they have not been able to get things working.

It is frustrating but I suspect the OnOne team are now trying to make a more general fix for those of us who have discovered Snow Leopard ‘broke’ things with the OnOne plugins.

  17. I just can’t see any of the presets in photo tools since using snow leopard.
No issues with crashing (yet) and when I installed snow leopard the one on softward automatically took me through a re-activation process.

Does anyone know how I can get the presets back?

    Cheers
    Clare

  18. I’m in the same boat than Clare. Lost all presets in photo tools. Also, FocalPoint seems to be freeze. I can not move the circles (the FOcal point) anymore… No issues with crashing.

Please, help us to get back the presets.

    Thanks in advance!

    Serge

  19. May I ask why this bit of information about deactivation wasn’t put out BEFORE Snow Leopard came out? There must be tens of thousands of us who have already upgraded. You should be apologizing for announcing this weeks after the release.

  20. I agree this should have been put out weeks ago. We rely on onOne for our company needs and shell out $400 for a program that no longer works. These posts are weeks old and a new update hasn’t come out to fix the problem. How hard can that be?

  21. So, Mike,
Your company does not get an advanced copy of major Apple upgrades so that your software can be tested? Wow. I thought that onOne had more visibility with Apple. I installed OS X 10.6 when on August 28; your email came September 16. Now, who exactly at onOne should receive my invoice for doing beta testing for you.

  22. it appears that the problems arise from your software license management only, not the plug-in themselves per se. to fix the problem asap, would you consider doing away with this presently and let the plug-ins function properly again first.

  23. @Bruce Lustig: Hi Bruce – we do get advanced copies of Apple updates as part of being a developer. I originally posted about the Snow Leopard issue on 9/1/09 and we have been updating our technical support page and FAQ regularly since then. 9/16/09 just happened to be when our eNews went out.

  24. Essentials 2 is no longer showing up in iPhoto after I upgraded my software to Snow Leopard (10.6).

  25. I have MaskPro 4.1.4 installed (not the suite) and am about to update to Snow Leopard. There is no “Deactivate” facility for this plug in. Is there anything I need to do before installing Snow Leopard?
    Peter

  26. I have the Plug-In 4.5 and Snow Leopard. I tried to use Genuine Fractals and it told me that I had to activate it again. I used my number and it rejected it saying that it has already been used (yes, it is my number). Then I went onto your website for info on how to fix the problem as I now have to activate everything. I read and re-read the inane instructions that were posted and cannot understand them. Instruction 4 says to launch the License Manager after downloading and then close “the application.” WHAT APPLICATION? Assuming it is License Manager, I closed it and when I went back to PS I still had to activate. Problem was that it said my number had already been used. Duh, since it is my number. So then I went back to License Manager and typed in my number, and it said that it had already been used. I am frustrated beyond belief as I can’t use Genuine Fractals and have a project due tomorrow and am up a creek. WHAT IS THE FIX FOR THIS????? Why do my other plug-ins work and this one doesn’t?????

  27. Look, i have one solution for u all…

i have tried Mike Wong solution, using new License Manager, but the problem is u have to do the same thing again after u restart or turn off ur computer…

so i decide to do this way :

    1. Copy the new License to OnOne Plugin Suite Folder
    2. Drag License Manager App to Dock
    3. Right Click on it and Choose –> Options –> Open at Login

    Done,

Now everytime u start ur Mac (login) this App will open, and u just have to click exit…

Sure this will feel as the inconnvenient solution, but this is the easiest way i found, better than browsing to the plugin folder each time u wanna run Photoshop… =)

Open ur Photoshop, and all ur Plugin should be work like normal…

I have tried it many times (Restarting my Macbook & Macpro again and again to test) and work till now..

so hope this will help u too…

NOTE : If u already Using Plugin 4.5.1 NEVER download & do The Update on the link posted by Mike Wong above…, i tried this before & it mess all, the License Fix don’t work anymore & i have to re-install all my plugin….
