DSLR Camera Remote Review

australia-iphone-reviewIf you are thinking about getting DSLR Camera Remote for the iPhone or iPod Touch but haven't made a decision yet, here's a good review from Australia iPhone.

Before I used DSLR Camera Remote, I was concerned that there was going to be a bit of a delay between tapping fire and my camera actually snapping the shot as this would be a major problem when shooting subjects like children or pets. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is no noticeable delay.

  1. Looks like exactly something I need! However, will Remote work with Snow Leopard? I searched the KB, but found only references to the plug-ins being updated. Before I drop $20, I just want to make sure I can use it!

    Thanks!

  2. Yes it does. I am using it with SL and have ZERO problems.
    Nikon D700.
Macbook Pro Unibody (Late 2008) 4GB RAM SL 10.6.1

  3. Good to hear that, thanks!

Update: Crap. The Remote Server doesn’t see my camera. (Nikon D3x) I’ve done the whole troubleshooting routine (restart and connect sequence), made sure that *no* transfer software starts up, (I created that setting using Image Capture), tried the “Start in Rosetta” option from the Get Info finder window, scoured the knowledge base…nothing.

Firewall is off. Battery is full. Tried alternate connection sequences. Still “No camera detected.”

Guess I’ll have to contact support. Not looking forward to that, as it states “Due to high call volume, our response time is currently 2-3 business days.”

I’ll be on a shoot then. I was really looking forward to using this on that job…

  4. OK, solved it. While flipping through the D3x manual, discovered that having “Mass Storage” selected in the option in the camera was causing the problem.

    Changed the setting to MTP/PTP.

    Bingo.

Works like a champ, and that Live View is awesome!

//off to cancel that support request…

  5. Have you thought about releasing an Android version of the application in addition to the iPhone version? Android handsets are in progress for every US phone carrier now, so it would widen your potential market quite a bit.

I’m on Verizon, and Motorola has a fantastic smartphone coming out at the end of the year which would be absolutely brilliant with your app. It has a 3.7″ screen with 854×480 resolution!

  6. Will the software work when a 5DM2, 7D, or D90 is in movie mode. That is, can I do the camera adjustments and see the screen in movie mode and start recording a movie? In the EOS Utility the movie only records to the camera, which makes sense because of the bandwidth.

If it does, does it support a rack focus, that is setting a few focus presets and being able to go between them?

    Thanks!

  7. totally awesome feature is the front mounted camera. I think this will be the feature everyone will try to provide now. Too bad most are locked in with AT&T, when there are many better networks out there.
