onOne Plug-ins and Photoshop CS5
April 14, 2010 by Mike Wong • 19 Comments
As I suspect most, if not all, of you read somewhere yesterday that Adobe has officially announced the upcoming availability of Photoshop CS5. There was an announcement back at Photoshop World and there have been lots of tidbits mentioned here and there on YouTube and Adobe Labs, but until today, third-party developers such as onOne Software were not allowed to talk about Photoshop Cs5 as part of our developer agreements and NDAs (non-disclosure agreements).
But now that the embargo has passed, we can now talk about Photoshop CS5 and how it will impact our plug-ins here at onOne Software. In fact, we issued a press release this morning all about it, but there's even more information here...
For the most part, all of the plug-ins will continue to work just fine. The big thing that most Mac OS X users are waiting for is 64-bit support. Windows users have had 64-bit support for some time and the Windows versions of our plug-ins have been 64-bit now for months. On the Mac OS X side, it is no small task to convert any of our plug-ins to be 64-bit compatible. I'd venture to say that is the case not with just plug-in developers but any developer - but I won't venture too far down that topic for now.
Okay, so where was I? Oh yeah, we are converting our plug-ins over to be 64-bit compatible on the Mac OS X side. We also need to compile a new version of our new onOne Panel that we introduced with Plug-In Suite 5 as a replacement for the aging and fragile onOne Menu that many people have come to love over the years. There will also be a bunch of installer work that needs to be done to make sure we install the pieces in the right places.
So now that you have somewhat of an idea of what we're doing, you probably want to know when they will be available. Our goal is to have Photoshop CS5 compatible updates for the current versions of our plug-ins available within 30 days of Photoshop CS5 being made widely available. Adobe said yesterday Photoshop CS5 (along with the rest of their updated apps) will be available within 30 days of April 12, 2010. So technically, that means we should have everything out there for you to download by June 12, 2010. I think it will be sooner than that, but that's the timeline we're telling you for now. If we get it done sooner, we will. But we know you want to only do the update once. So please be patient.
I've talked to several people already who plan on getting Photoshop CS5 immediately and running it along side Photoshop CS4 which allows them to get up to speed with Photoshop CS5 now while they still have Photoshop CS4 and their necessary plug-ins to get their work done if they need to. Your approach to this may vary and is up to you.
Now, for the cost. If you own a current version of one of our products ((Current versions as of 4/13/2010 are: Plug-In Suite 5, Genuine Fractals 6, PhotoTools 2.5, PhotoFrame 4.5, Mask Pro 4, PhotoTune 3, FocalPoint 2)), the update is absolutely free. Just check for the update via your Help Menu > Check for Updates... or from our Software Updates page. You can also see a compatibility chart here. Please note, we that we do not plan to do any compatibility updates for any of the older versions of our products.
If you own a previous version of any of our plug-ins, you can upgrade individual products for $99.95 or if you own an earlier version of the Plug-In Suite you can upgrade to Suite 5 for $199.95.
We're really excited about the new version of Photoshop CS5 and think you will be too.

Well, does it mean by then the suite also work with Aperture 3 (64-bit) as well?
@Joshua – yes, that is correct. Our Suite 5.1 update will address 64-bit compatibility which includes both Photoshop CS5 and Aperture 3.

So you won’t be providing plug in suite 4 users any updates?
It would be great if onOne software offered an incentive for suite 4 users to upgrade.
Just a thought.
Does this mean my Genuine Fractals V5 won’t work at all with CS5?
Kurt
@Mike Wong – Let me see if I understand correctly: You stated in the Aperture 3.0 post that our update for 64bit would come on May 15th, Now you state that the CS5 is coming in June… Then you tell @Joshua that BOTH updates aren coming together which tells me that the Aperture 64bit update has the potential to not materialize until June (not in May 15th as you stated before)… can you please clarify which post we should believe? Your response to Joshua is contradictory to what you posted about Aperture 3.0.
Thank you!
@Marco – We’re working as fast as we can to get the updates out as soon as possible. Sometimes things take longer than we think. At the time I posted that Aperture 3 native 64-bit support would be available on May 15th, that is what I and our engineering team honestly believed. We’re still working as fast as we can to hit that date.
That being said, there are significant efficiencies for us to release both updates (Aperture 3 & CS5) at the same time and so we’re working on trying to make that happen. Believe me, we want to get these out to everybody as soon as possible and are working hard to make it happen asap.
Thank you for your response. I just wanted to get a more realistic timeline for Aperture, I agree with you about trying to match development cycles (if only Apple and Adobe did released products at the same time!) and how much more can be done that way. I now can plan accordingly for both CS5 purchase and Aperture update expectations!
Thanks again!
I like to tell you how I feel about your software, it’s is just super. I’m a homebody, and have been disabled, for the last 15 years. I enjoy photography, since I started taking pictures at the age of 13. I started taking classes at are community college, I started slow and one day I spoke to a counselor who handle disabled students. She told me with my background I should enroll at least half-time in school, so that is why I have why I am gone back to college at the age of 56.
as a photographer, I have used most recently Adobe’s Creative Suite 4, but I have been using Photoshop since version 5.5. I try to use new software and enjoy the ability to experiment if you would use the word on your product a 30 day trial. I was looking for program that will do what I want to do. I have tried numerous different programs similar to yours some costing much more than you were charging for yours. But, as of today, I still have not found one program or suite, that can surpass the creativity that you shown your Plug-In Suite 5. some came close but as they say “Not Close Enough.
I brought my Plug-In Suite 5 During your sale last month. As a student again, they cost money to go back to college. I have used the student loans and grants that I have gotten for buying equipment and books. Also cameras are not cheap anymore. When you are starting out again as a photographer after a long hiatus, equipment I had was not going to do it. So, I was in a unique situation, having to choose new equipment, cameras, strobes, umbrellas, and software. So I chose Nikon for the cameras and flash units, Wescott for my studio strobes and several other well-known companies for my other hardware requirements. Now my software, In my line of work which is, photography and photo restoration, I use Adobe Lightroom, as my start of my workflow, I use Adobe Creative Suite for my touchups and restorations and now I use plug-in suite which integrated seamlessly into CS 4.
Now that Adobe’s Creative Suite 5 has been announced you have made me and many others a promise that plug-in Suite 5 will work seamlessly with Adobe’s new product. I can’t wait to try it out, some of the results I have just playing with it has been fantastic.
I would have paid, the $599 price for your software package. But being a student on a limited budget I was patiently waiting to find out if there was a student discount, which there was. Then you drop the price in an sale, for the same product that I would have paid the $599 price tag if I had too.
in conclusion, I have one sentence for you people. “Keep doing what you’ve been doing” and again thanks.
Yours truly,
Kristyanna
I recently bought Plug-In Suite 5 Pro only to discover that I need a new computer to run this program. Stupid me for not being able to read the system requirements. But my question is, if I buy a new mac today, and CS5, would it be able to run my new software from you? Is a new Mac, run with 64 bit or is it only for PC’s? I guess I would have to download an update from you. I need to use your software now! I don’t want to buy a new computer. Oh well….
Mike- While I do like the Plug-in Suite 5 and especially FocalPoint and all the free training videos available, I have to say I think you’re really pushing the envelope of marketing BS by now saying “..available within 30 days of Photoshop CS5 being made widely available….”
What does ‘widely available’ mean? The software’s either available or it isn’t…to put ‘widely’ in there is just to add an out on the dates. If it’s really 45 days or 60 days from when CS5 started shipping just say that.
Many of us ordered the CS5 suite upgrade when it was first offered and the product has been shipping for some time now…more over, Adobe put up the trial of the CS5 suite to allow anyone to download it in the US and Canada….but you would hold it’s still not *widely* available?
I’ll look forward to using it when it’s out but I just feel like you’re really stretching the credibility of the 30 days after shipment issue.
Gee People, cut them some slack. OnOne is very complicated software. When the update is available they will release it. You can use what you have till then. If you must know the exact release date now maybe it’s time to log off and get a life.
I’m getting really frustrated. I’ve read the support notes and tried everything to get my Genuine Fractals 6 to load in Photoshop CS5, but it’s still not showing. I’ve gone to Windows/Extensions and also automate per the instructions in the support area, and it’s still not showing. I did download the latest update too.
Any suggestions?
@Stacey – A couple of quick suggestions:
1. Make sure you have Genuine Fractals 6.0.5; as a registered owner, you can get the latest version from our Software Updates page
2. Second, look in your plug-ins folder inside your Adobe Photoshop CS5 folder and make sure it’s in there.
3. If the answer to both 1 & 2 is yes, relaunch Photoshop and look under the File > Automate menu.
Best,
Mike
i own suite 4.5 and it worked perfectly well and wonderfully with Photoshop CS4. I have now purchased CS5, and coped the plug-ins from the CS4 plug in folder.
they do not show up at all either in the window>extensions folder, or in the automate folder. do i really need to buy new software upgrade for good results?
(i will check out your software upgards page as well)
thanks,
susana millman
@susana millman – To be safe, you should run the installer that you got with your Plug-In Suite 5 purchase. Sometimes, just copying the files over won’t work.
Best,
Mike
@Mike Wong
Susana is asking if she can use the plugin suite 4.5 in PS CS5. She didnt say that she bought the plugin suite 5.
Could you please reply on this, since i also bought PS CS5 and cant seem to make my Plugin suite 4.5 work…
All the best
Thomas
@ Mike Wong
I too would like a direct answer to Susana’s question. Did the CS5 release cut us off at the knees with our plugin suite 4.5 (and prior) investment? If not, how about some clearly worded instructions on how to make our 4.5 software usable in CS5. Times are hard and not everyone can make all these updates at once.
Not hassling, just asking.
Thanks.
Fred
WOW! The 5.5 plug-ins work on CS5 for Mac (OS 10.6.6) but when I look under File/Automate I see multiples of each plug-in. And they all work but what a nightmare to look at. Why would this happen?
I’m going to try uninstalling and then reinstall to see what happens.
