Important Notice regarding onOne Software and Mac OSX 10.7 Lion
If you are not a Mac OS X user, you can stop reading this now.
If you are a Mac OS X user and plan on upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7 Lio, please read this important message.
Deactivate your onOne Software product before upgrading to Mac OS X Lion
Please make sure to deactivate your onOne Software products before installing Mac OS 10.7 or backing up your system disk and then installing Mac OSX 10.7. The instructions to deactivate the software are located HERE.
Once you have the new Mac OS X installed, you will be able to open your onOne Software products and activate without any trouble.
PhotoFrame Users
If you are using PhotoFrame and make changes to your image and choose the 'Apply' button, the product will crash (along with Photoshop). This only occurs when using the product as a Photoshop plug-in. We are working on releasing an update to address this problem. PhotoFrame will perform fine if you are using PhotoFrame as a standalone application. This is a temporary work around so you will have use of the product while we work on the update.
PhotoTools Users
If you are using PhotoTools to make changes to your image and choose the 'Apply' button, the product will crash (along with Photoshop). We are working on releasing an update to address this problem. Unfortunately, we do not have a work around for this issue and will be releasing an update to address this problem.

How soon can we expect the updates?
I use photo essentials as a plug -in for Elements 9. the only deactivation option in help deactivates Elements not the plug-in. Now what?
Dear Sir, i have photo tools and frames on my pc with photoshop cs3. until your warning about photoshop crashing i’ve had no problems. so how come you are suggesting that it might? or am i misreading your warning. does it just apply to mac users? z.s
@Zubin – this article only applies to users of Mac OS X who are planning on upgrading to the latest version of Mac OS X version 10.7 (aka Lion). If you are on a Windows PC, there is no problem. If you do not upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.7, there is no problem.
For those planning on upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, we are working on an update.
Best,
Mike
Photo Tools and Aperture are essential to my photography. I planned to upgrade to Lion as soon as it was available. What is the latest regarding compatibility?
@Scott – I don’t have an update as yet. Our developer who will be working on the fixes was finishing up some updates to another product but that is now complete. We should have some more info later this week.
I’m in the same boat as you with respect to wanting to upgrade to Lion, but I use PhotoTools so much, I’m going to wait. As such, I’m keeping the pressure on the developers to get the update done asap.
Thanks for your patience.
Best,
Mike
Hi – this morning I deactivated OnOne as suggested, then installed Lion. Trying to Launch OnOne to reactivate however now leads to a “There was a problem communicating with the activation background process. Please reinstall the product. (-151)” message.
Please advise.
(Also given the issue with Time Machine back up a few weeks back, and thread floating around about OnOne software being the reason the Mac’s don’t go automatically to sleep after it’s been installed – I’m starting to loose faith in quality control…
~mike
@Mike Paolini,
The -151 error indicates that the activation service isn’t running or installed on your Mac. If you run the onOne installer again, it will reinstall that service and you should then be good to go.
Best,
Mike
I can’t find the deactivation menu item. Doesn’t seem to exist in Mask Pro 4.1 on CS5. Can upgrade to Lion if I can’t deactivate Mask Pro. Help!
@Noah – Launch Photoshop. Launch Mask Pro (File > Automate > Mask Pro 4.1…) and then from the Help menu, Deactivate is the last item in that menu.
Best,
Mike
Hi Mike,
Thank you for the reply. That’s exactly where I’m going, but I’m only seeing options for:
Mask Pro Help…
Find Tutorials Online…
Show Welcome Screen…
That’s it. No Deactivate.
Any thoughts?
@Noah – is there an Activate menu option? Maybe you have a version before the activation was added in which case, I would think you’d be fine. Or maybe you’re already deactivated?
Worst case scenario, you can contact us or email me and first thing in the am, I’ll have someone in Customer Service reset or issue you a new serial number.
-Mike
It’s strange. No Activate menu either. I’m running 4.1.8. I’ll call in the AM for a new serial number. Thank you.
@Noah – okay. Sounds like a plan. Let me know if you need my help and I’ll do whatever I can.

Pingback: Mac OS X Lion & Photo/Video Software Compatibility
Hello All,
Last night I upgraded to MAC OS X Lion (10.7) and Just now I re activated my Photo-suite license and tried out the Photo tools 2.6 effects on one of the images just to try if it works or not and the Good news is it worked perfectly for me. The plug-in along with Photoshop CS 5 did not crash. In addition the plugin is a lot faster compared to the time it took in Snow Leopard.
Thanks,
Mitesh Patel
Hello All,
In addition to my previous comment, Photo Frame works perfectly as well. No crashes or hang up.
Thanks,
Mitesh Patel

Hi – just checking to see if there’s an ETA on the PhotoTools patch. I really want Lion, but it is essential for me that all of PhotoTools functions before I upgrade.
@John – I don’t have an ETA yet, but I can tell you one of our best engineers is working on it.
@Mitesh – that’s great news!
I upgraded to Lion prior to seeing this post about deactivating. When I try to access OnOne products (Phototools, etc.) in Photoshop, it says they’re not available at this time. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem, or do I have to wait for a patch to be released?
Thanks!
Hi, I upgraded before I found out about the deactivation. What should I do?
@Josh & @Tim – I’ll ask our Customer Service team to contact each of you to reset your serial numbers.
Hello. I also upgraded to Lion before I saw the notice about deactivating and now Pthototools is not working.
Please help
Phototools only crashes on large images. Reducing the image size works for me.
You can still export using “Batch” within PhotoTools, it will still crash, but the JPEG it exported will still have the effects applied.
@Mike & @Jeff,
Thank you for your reports and feedback. I’ve forwarded them to our team as well. I really appreciate your feedback!
I upgraded to Lion today as well so I’m pushing extra hard for these issues to get resolved asap!
Best,
Mike
FWIW, I have upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (10.7) and had PhotoTools 2.6 crash after selecting “Apply” with a 2.4M jpg (24M uncompressed) image file.
However, after reducing the image by 50% which resulted in a 5.99M uncompressed size image file, PhotoTools 2.6 worked fine. ???
Ooops, I loaded Lion before reading this. I have elements, and it’s not working properly. What next?
I decided to go ahead with the Lion upgrade last night and have used PhotoTools 2.6 on a couple of images today – everything is working so far without having to scale down images.
Missed deactivating Suite on one of my Macs before updgrading to Lion. Removed all programs in Suite from my computer, downloaded trial Suite from website, and then reactivated using my original license. Worked like a charm.
Unfortunately I have already upgraded to OSX lion – Lightroom plugins for suite 5.5 now playing up….
So what is the procedure for me to get my newly bought software up and running again.
Programs seem to start OK – it only seems to be when ‘apply’ is clicked to changed files that things go wrong. Does this mean all I need to do is wait for upgrades or will I have to still deactivate?????
Ironically, I still have Phototools 2.5 and don’t seem to have any issue with crashing … yet.
Running Phototools 2.5 and I do get the same crashing issues when clicking “apply”. Hoping for a fix soon.
I unfortunately found that when pressing the apply button, the software would crash photoshop. resizing the image was not an option. saddened and frustrated i wanted/needed to find a work around. then it dawned on me, perhaps it’s just 64bit that this is happening to. I quickly switched over to 32bit, BOOOM! it works! ideal, no. does it work, YES.
I concur with mr man. Switched PS CS5 to 32 bit mode, brilliant, no crash! Much easier to to do that than downgrade to SL while the patch is being developed, thanks!
I also upgraded to Lion before reading this and now it causes PS to crash 80% of the time. How can I fix it now post upgrade?
Hi!
How can I run PS CS5 in 32 bit mode?
Thanks in advance!
Hi there,
I upgraded to Lion before I found out that you should deactivate first, now I can’t use Perfect Resize, and I need to get a resized photograph to the printers today. What can I do? Thanks.
Can we please get a status update with a FIRM date on which this issue will be fixed?
The Phototool crashes along with the Photoshop 5.1 on Lion after the Apply button is pressed. Any update to resolution it today? It makes the software completely useless for my production.
My husband updated without me knowing and I didn’t deactivate. Now I can’t get OnOne to work and it crashes photoshop everytime. What should I do?
@Sothoth, you can start Photoshop in 32-bit mode on Mac OS X by doing the following:
1. Find the Photoshop application in your Application folder.
2. Option-click on it and select Get Info
3. Enable the check-box labeled “Open in 32-bit mode”
This is a bit of an issue for me. I’ve just bought two new macs and want to use my free upgrade to Lion within the timeslot allowed by Apple. A date for a fix would be really helpful.
We’re still investigating what is causing the crash. I do not have an ETA for the fix. We’re working on this and hope to have a solution ASAP.
Thanks for your patience.
@Willie- I’m not sure how the upgrade works but if it is a download, I think you might be able to download the Lion update but not run it. We’ll provide a eta on the update once we have it.
@Mike. Thanks for the suggestion. I am pretty keen to install Lion, and hope you are able to come up with a solution in the near future. I might just try installing and then running PS in 32 bit mode as suggested above
Mike – another week has gone by with now fix released and no ETA. Very frustrating. Can we please get some sort of a ball park ETA?
Not sure if this has been resolved or if I am just lucky, but I am running Lion, PS CS4, and the latest version of Perfect Suite 5. I just tried Photo Tools and it worked fine. I haven’t tried any of the other plugins yet, but I experienced no issues.
I upgraded before I saw this post as well. Please let me know what to do.
Good work mate, I’m another waiting this update…among other updates. I know it’s nothing to do with this software but my image data base is on a net gear STORA raid which since i upgraded to lion I can no longer access. I wish this system had an easy temporary repair whilst waiting for the fix…
With the foto tools I obviously found the same problems upon clicking on apply but I got around it by once crashing going into batch and applying the ‘latest one used’ and then applying. Both apps crash but it still applys the work you have done in foto tools and gives you an image. I’m not whether this info will help you developers, and if so, I’m sure you’ve probably already worked this out.
I too upgraded to Lion on my MBP before reading this. Please let me know what to do now!
Thanks.
Just a quick note to everybody here…
1. If you upgraded to Mac OS X Lion, before deactivating, contact our Customer Service team. They’ll reset your serial number.
2. It looks like we have a fix for the PhotoTools and PhotoFrame crashing issue and are in the final stages of testing it. If all goes well, we will get it posted for you to download ASAP.
I’ll post again when the patch is updated and we’ll email everybody as well.
Thank you once again for your patience.
Best,
Mike
I just upgrade to Photoshop CS 5 my System is Mac OS X 10.5.8
I been using the Photo Tools Plugin since I had CS 3, CS 4 no problem. Now when I use the “apply” button it crashes my Photoshop CS5 and I have to go back and use CS3 if I want to use my plugins. But that is a pain since I going fron Ligthroom to Photpshop CS5
My OS X is old version as you can see?
What should I do?
Bob
I am running the latest version of Photoshop on OSX Lion. When I download the OnOne suite and attempt to install I get a message that it cannot be installed because it cannot find Photoshop. What can I do to fix this?
Alas- I did not see this and installed Lion first. Is there any hope? I am very sad at the loss of my Perfect Resize.
I followed the instructions, then got the 151 error, then reinstalled as suggested and I can go into photo tools. But, it crashes when Applying changes
WOW! Thanks so much you guys! I am back up and running only a few hours after posting here!
Your customer service is beyond fantastic. Never before have I been contacted from a blog or forum post and helped.
THANK YOU!
Stella
has the patch been released yet?
Pretty please, release the patch
btw, I noticed with a few different plugins that restarting the Mac after installing Lion and Photoshop solved the problem. PhotoTools of course is just plain dead as soon as you press apply, same goes for the batch edition.
OK, it has been a week since the last update from OnOne. When will the patch be ready for PhotoTools? Anyone else think that current Suite owners should get the Layers upgrade at no charge as an apology for causing our workflow to grind to a hault?
@Ivan – I posted an update to the Lion status late last night/early this morning.
http://www.ononesoftware.com/blog/2011/08/09/update-mac-os-x-lion-and-time-machine/
Current Suite owners already get Perfect Layers at no charge. Not as an apology, but as our normal, everyday policy that Suite owners get all updates between major releases at no charge. Just go to the Help menu from one of your products and choose Check for Updates.
I bought a new macbook air with lion factory installed. I installed photoshop cs5 and then installed Photoframe 4.6 free and Phototools 2.6 free to test them out, however both are not available at this time.
What should I do?
How do you uninstall them?
Sorry really new to OnOne.
Thanks.
@Mike – Thanks for checking out our software. We have fixes in the works for these, but in the meantime if you want to remove them, you can simply drag the onOne folders from your Applications folder to the trash.
Also, you’ll want to remove the onOne files from the Photoshop plug-ins folder.
Best,
Mike
Mike,
Awesome news. Thanks for the update. Thanks for the “Help” tip. I figured it would only look for updates to the existing items and not to the total package. Thanks again.
Ivan
32-bit mode worked great!
32 bit mode works, will we need to call customer service for reset of serial number prior to patch install when it is released?
Thank’s in advance
Hi, I upgraded Lion 10.7 before I found out about the deactivation. What should I do?
I have 2 Licenses 1 for Phototools 2.6 and 1 for Perfect Photo Suite and on Lion 10.7 it does Crash Photoshop. Please Help me.
New to onOne. My Mac has OS X Lion installed. The demo version of Photo Tools 2.6 Pro worked fine so I purchased a license this evening and installed the purchased version. Now I cannot get it to work in Photoshop CS5 (demo version): “The command Photo Tools 2.6 Professional Edition is not currently available.” What do I do?
I migrated to Mac with OS X Lion already installed, then downloaded the Mac version of Plug-In Suite. When I hit apply, it returns to CS5 and appears to be processing, but then crashes as soon as it is done. I read the tip here about using CS5 in 32-bit mode and now it works. Would love to have it work in 64-bit mode.
By the way, the company was great in helping me get the Mac version for FREE after migrating from the PC version.
…sorry, but didn’t you say that the Phototools update for Lion should be available within the end of the last week? Unfortunately I can work neither in 32bit mode nor in 64bit mode. And I think many other photographers will also be precluded in their work. When will it finaly be available? …greetings from Italy!
Can we PLEASE get another update??
@Norbert & @John Holbrook – the updates were posted earlier this week. We posted a new blog entry about it.
http://www.ononesoftware.com/blog/2011/08/15/perfect-photo-suite-5-5-4-update-installers-available/
After an update to Lion two things must be in order to avoid the crashing issue in Photoshop CS5. After much trial and error I discovered that, aside from applying the filter on very small file sizes, that you must be in 32-bit mode for Photoshop CS5 and very important, you must set your preferences in Photoshop to “Open Documents as Tabs” which is the default for CS5 or updaters to CS5. Photoshop>Preferences>Interface>Open Documents as Tabs.
Perhaps we will see a fix for this in the future.

That’s right! Rick, I’m applied your instructions and…. Bingo!!!!!!! Photoshop CS5 in 64 bits mode and large files work flawless in onOne Photo Suite 5.5.4
Thanks so much!
