You are invited to join onOne Software and award winning photographer and Canon Explorer of Light, Ken Sklute, for the 2012 WPPI Photo Ride! I hope that you will have time to join us on Thursday, February 23, 2012, the closing day of the convention. We will depart the MGM Grand Hotel at 9:00AM and after signing out both bikes and helmets, we will journey north to the beautiful Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour north of the strip. We will eat lunch in the park and have a ton of fun at our stops!

Ken has found a motocycle rental company that can accommodate us with a wide variety of motorcycles to fit most tastes including trikes, a three wheeled bike of sorts that does not require a separate motorcycle license. The Trike normally rents for $250/day, but we were able to negotiate a special rate of $199.00/day. Ken has also negotiated a rental of $89.90/day for most two wheelers. The rental includes a helmet (necessary in Nevada), unlimited mileage and the shiny new bike! You bring goggles, leathers, boots, gloves, cameras and the fun!

We are planning to return to the hotel sometime between 4:30PM and 5:30PM We are asking for a $25.00 deposit to hold your spot on the trip. Your payment will go towards a boxed lunch, refreshments and a commemorative t-shirt.

Reserve your spot today as we are limiting the number of riders to 50. Please contact Ken Sklute at KenSklute@mac.com for your reservation.

Click here to watch the video from the 2008 ride.

Learn more about Ken Sklute

We hope to see you there!!!

I couldn't help myself. I've been using Perfect Photo Suite 6 for a while now and I can't rave enough about how much I love what our amazing engineers and designers have built.

I wanted to share a quick before/after of an UrbEx HDR image that I took a few months ago. I processed the image using Perfect Effects and then blended in an overlay from PhotoFrame - all without leaving the Perfect Photo Suite UI. It was effortless!

Oh, and I saved the Perfect Effects preset for this image so you can all enjoy the same look when you get your copy of the Suite in late October!

The best part about Photoshop World is that there is never a shortage of events to go to and people to see. To that end, I am really excited that onOne will be working directly with the good folks at NAPP to host this year's Tweetup! For those of you who may not be familiar with what a Tweetup is, picture a gathering of hundreds of like-minded photographers, all out to have a great time and prepare for three solid days of Photoshop World pandemonium. That's a Tweetup in a nutshell.

Our friend, Erik Valind, returns as the event photographer, and there is no doubt he will be grabbing some 'memorable' shots again. Erik will be using DSLR Camera Remote HD in full effect during the Tweetup, so you'll get a chance to see how awesome it is in action!

Everyone who is anyone will be there! Plus, there will be a ton of awesome prizes that we'll be raffling off including copies of the Perfect Photo Suite, books by Peachpit Press, swag from Kelby Media & more! The details of the event are below. We hope to see you there!

What: The Fall 2011 Photoshop World Las Vegas Tweetup

When: Tuesday, September 06th, 2011 starting at 8:00PM Pacific

Where: The patio area just outside of the Registration Desk area of the Convention Center (near the pool area). Maps below:

Okay. I'll be the first to admit that we made a mistake in removing support for the older Canon cameras perhaps a bit too quickly. After hearing all of your comments and feedback, we've looked further into our ability to continue to distribute the older, non-supported Canon SDKs and I'm happy to report that we can. Keep in mind that your feature set is essentially frozen at version 1.4 of the app because Canon is no longer adding any additional functionality to these cameras via their SDK, but you'll be able to continue using the app and you won't have to be bothered by annoying update messages that you wouldn't have been able to do prior to this change we're making.

As such, earlier today, we built a new version of the DSLR Camera Remote Server which we are calling DSLR Camera Remote Server Classic. It will add back in all of the support that was in DSLR Camera Remote Server version 1.4.0 and will work with the latest update to the DSLR Camera Remote app for your favorite iOS device.

After we post the new "Classic" server to download later this week (we need to make sure we didn't break anything), if you have one of the older (classic) Canon cameras, go ahead and update your iOS app and then download the Classic version of the Server and you'll be back up and running.

I apologize for any problems this may have caused. I'll post again when the Classic server is available to download.

I was going through some of my photos from earlier this year and came across this one. As soon as I saw it, I thought of a couple of effects in PhotoTools that I had to try on it.

Here is the original photo that I shot back in January 2011.

Next, I took it into PhotoTools 2.6 Professional Edition and applied the Daily Multi Vitamin effect at 61 percent.

Next, I added the Creamsickle effect at 42 percent. If you're new to PhotoTools, one thing you'll quickly learn is that not all effects are intended to be used at 100 percent. Using the Fade slider is key to getting the right look for your images.

I shot this photo around 2:30 pm. Not even close to that desired Golden Hour where you get the beautiful, even light. So I added a touch of it with the Golden Hour Enhancer effect in PhotoTools at only 7 percent because for this photo, more than that felt like, well, too much. You can barely see the difference in this screenshot, but on my monitor when editing, I could definitely see it.

Finally, I wanted to add a bit of a dreamy quality to the photo, so I added the Deep Forest effect at 43 percent. This is a fantastic effect, but you have to watch how much of it you add to your photo. Too much and it completely kills the image. Get it just right though with the Fade slider and it's perfect.

Here's a final Before / After that you can view. Just move the slider to the left or right to see the original and the final image.

Last but not least, I saved the effect stack as a PhotoTools 2.6 Professional Preset that you can download and use if you'd like. Just click here to download the preset. You can download more presets and watch a short video on how to install them on the PhotoTools product page here.

I wanted to share with you a comment and an email about our DSLR Camera Remote HD app for the iPad that I received recently from photographer and film maker Andy McKay. Andy recently purchased the DSLR Camera Remote HD and employed it immediately on the set of a music video he was working on. Here are a couple of photos that Andy sent me (and has given me permission to include on the blog here) that show the app in action on the set. You can read all of Andy's comments and wish list for future feature updates on his Tumblr blog here.

A little while back, I was introduced to fine art and advertising photographer Doug Landreth (web site). Doug is based in the Pacific Northwest out of Seattle (just up I-5 from us) and in addition to his fine art work, also leads a photography workshop called "Scratching the Surface".

After talking to Doug for a bit, he told me about how much he enjoys using and teaching Mask Pro 4.1 so I asked him if he would share a couple of examples of how he's using Mask Pro. Here's the first composite Doug forwarded to me to share with all of you. All of the images below are courtesy and copyright Doug Landreth. His words accompany the images.

From Doug...

"I'm conducting workshops for photographers that focus on the creative process and the photoshop techniques I use in my fine art. My work is heavily constructed and many times combines large numbers of images to construct a whole new image. I discuss layers, layer masks and selections extensively and of course I show my students the many benefits of using the suite of tools provided for making great selections in Mask Pro. I'm including this image because, #1, it's fun, but most importantly we use it as a tutorial on making selections for compositing images."

"I pass out the 4 raw files used in the composite and walk everyone thru the process of masking out the parts of the images we want to use and we gradually build this image... dare I say, from the ground up ."

"It's a great project for Mask Pro for several reasons.... we mask the original building image with a combination of color based selection and pen tool selection, the rocket ship is the hero hard edge selection with the pen tool, and the face is a great combination of both the hard edge pen tool selection as well as a selection of the hair."

"Several points that resonate with the students are that all the tools can be used in the same selection process, the path created by the pen tool automatically becomes a selection with a refinable edge, and there is no chance that 45 minutes into a complex pen tool selection that the path will disappear with no hope of recovering it (a chorus of groans from those who've experienced this in Photoshop )."

"Another major benefit I demonstrate is the ability to use all these tools and view the results against the background they've been placed over to see the final appearance as well as the color decontaminate feature. It is also important for them to know that the mask and any of it's soft edges are a greyscale image. I show them how they can further refine the mask results with some burning or dodging of the shadows or highlights of the mask to contract or expand areas of the mask they need to refine. That's a real eye-opener."

Recently, we had our most popular and highest attended webinar yet. Brian Matiash, a good friend and amazing photographer, did a one hour webinar that showed how he uses PhotoTools 2.5 Professional Edition to enhance and stylize his HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography and images.

Earlier this week, I posted the recorded webinar to the onOne University so if you missed it or just want to watch it again, head over there now and you can watch it for free.

We're still working on getting all of the questions that were asked answered and when we do, we'll post them here on the blog. Thanks to all of you who attended and thank you also to our good friends over at X-Rite for co-sponsoring the webinar with Brian.
