In an attempt to keep everybody informed and to consolidate multiple comment threads from multiple posts, I’m creating this page to keep track of feature requests as they come in and to cross them off as they get added. If you have a feature request and don’t see it in this list, please submit a comment on this page and I’ll get it added to the list.
Thanks in advance for your support and interest in DSLR Camera Remote for the iPhone!

Please note, that this list is published in no particular order and you shouldn’t read anything into the order in which a feature request is listed here. The only exception might be that a feature has a footnote attached to it with confirmation of a specific update plan. Further, some of these ideas, while great, may not be possible for us to do, but I’m listing them here so you know that we’ve received the request at least.
Also, I would like to ask for your patience on updates. I know this is an exciting app for many of you (including myself) but we have 10 other products that we are also working on with quite a few owners of those products asking us to update those as well. With a finite number of hours in a day and engineers to get things done, we can’t get to everything at once. I’m not making excuses, just trying to provide context. But rest assured, we’re committed to this product and will provide updates as often as we can.
If you don’t see your feature request listed above, or if you would like to leave a suggestion on how a feature listed above would be of particular use to you, please leave a comment below.

Hi Mike,
I think this is related to the “Save to memory card only” request…
What I would love is to be able to shoot in RAW+Small JPEG, save both files to the memory card, but send *only* the Small JPEG back to the laptop. I’d set up Lightroom to watch the DSLR Remote folder, and have it auto import the Small JPEG from there to have the laptop function as a (near) live review (the small JPEG size is more than adequate for checking focus, composition, etc. when shooting). As an alternate, if the DSLR Remote Server program could act as a simple, live “slideshow” viewer, that would be really cool as well (and probably a bit snappier than handing off the file to Lightroom for just review monitoring purposes).
A bit of background: I’m using a Canon 5DmkII with the WFT-E4A grip, and I shoot tethered using the WFT FTP method (where, as you can probably guess, I shoot RAW+Small JPEG, save the RAW to the CF card, send only the small JPEG to the laptop wirelessly, and have Lightroom auto import the JPEG for review). The workflow is superb, and in the studio it is even better, as I connect an LCD HDTV as a second monitor to the laptop, and have Lightroom display each incoming photo on the HDTV – the client and model can immediately see what I’m shooting from across the room if they want to.
The nice thing about the FTP mode in the WFT is that it won’t slow down shooting – I can shoot as fast as I like, and the WFT will send the JPEG at it’s leisure, asynchronously. And at that, the smallest JPEG only take 1 second or so to be sent wirelessly, so the file transmission can keep up with shooting in most cases anyway.
I’d love to mimic this workflow with DSLR Remote… Having the iPhone as a viewfinder, combined with the laptop as a review monitor, would be incredibly useful (and the tech nerd in me would be thrilled!) At the moment, it’s not practical, unfortunately. As you know, shooting RAW+JPEG with DSLR Remote will send both the RAW and JPEG files to the server, and the RAW file takes a good 30 seconds or so at 802.11g speeds. Compounding that, it appears that PTP will not allow async file transfer (even using the EOS Utility) – which makes some sense, as it’s supposed to emulate using the camera controls, but it is a bit annoying. The upshot is that I can only take a shot every 30-45 seconds or so if I want to tether wirelessly using the WFT and shoot RAW (which is a drag in most cases).
However, I think if it’s possible to coerce the Canon SDK to only send the JPEG when shooting RAW+JPEG, it would be quite useful even if it’s still an async transmission. If it could be knocked down to, say, 1 shot every 3 or 4 seconds (including overhead with DSLR Remote), that would be fantastic. As it stands, shooting RAW slows it down to one shot every 45 seconds or so, which is limiting in it’s application. (Of course, I could shoot JPEG only, but that isn’t going to happen…
Anyway, I have to say, I’m loving playing around with DSLR Remote – it’s a brilliant app, and I’m sure it’s going to dramatically improve with each release iteration. Using it with USB (or wired ethernet) tethering is really quite good, and the speed is pretty decent with RAW, but to go fully wireless with the WFT would be an incredible setup.
Incidentally, I’d also be interested in the other request for “Native support for WiFi grips”, but that’s a different workflow – the only review monitor would be the iPhone itself. But I can see that being handy when I’m not in the studio, and I can’t take the laptop with me.
Thanks again for writing this amazing application!

As far as GPS goes; I think the easiest way is to register the location when sitting up the camera (or if it is moved)–I’m curious what the longest distance capture is at this point. I’m loving the majority of the features that are being requested–being a newb photog, I didn’t realize how much of what the community likes is the same as what I like!

I would like the option on the server to use an incremental numbering of files. When I disconnect and reconnect the camera numbering will start over and overwrite previous images. I know it just needs a little user attention, but it can be overcome by the software, I think

Hello Mike.
Great as DSLR remote is I would again like to ask for the option to start Movie Mode on the Canon 5D Mark II. Is there a technical reason that makes this impossible or very difficult? Any chance it will be included in the next update? Thanks.

June 21, 2009 at 2:32 am
@Pip Kato:
Technically, the starting and stopping of video is not supported in the latest Canon SDK for the 5D Mark II or the T1i for that matter. We’re trying to see if we can come up with a different solution though. We want this feature too!

June 22, 2009 at 8:29 am
Mike,
Thanks for this stunning app. It makes my 5D Mark II even more impressive and valuable.
My request is a combination of direct USB connect and support for Wifi grips. Can one (you?) not make the iPhone or iPod touch become a lightweight Wifi connect for the camera itself? It would be great to attach my touch via USB to the camera, even glue it to the back and remotely operate it with a second iPhone/touch via Wifi. This should work on an existing Wifi connection from a separate router. But maybe it´s also possible to create a network with an iPhone like with a MacBook.

I’d like to second the idea of starting and stopping video with your software, as well as adding support for the +/- exposure functionality.
Also, I’d use an override to the camera in intervalometer mode. In other words, I’d like to be able to manually shoot frames IN ADDITION to those timed in the settings, without canceling out of the intervalometer sequence. Others might want a pause and resume of an intervalometer session.
I’d also like to see you add a function that keeps the DSLR Remove Server application at the front-most position. When using a high-end Macbook Pro today, the iPhone lost contact with the server if the application window stayed behind other running applications. If this were a preference, users could have the option to manage that functionality.

Hi,
I read the faq about supported cameras as of early June. Should I take it for granted that if the 1ds (first version) is not listed, it automatically means it isn’t supported? I’m asking because the next version of the body is on the list. I’m also willing to test the application if there is a chance…

Support for shooting a focus stacking set (on Canon 40D). Something like – user focuses to near point using focus control in application, set as near point, user focuses to far point, set as far point, software calculates intermediate focal slice distances (using preset criteria for focus sharpness (circle of confusion?)), button for shooting focal slice set enabled, tapping button shoots set . This request is superset of the depth of focus calculations request above + being able to set a focal point. I would pay serious money for this feature.

Any chance of an Android version of this great looking app?

July 5, 2009 at 11:50 am
I have two requests, or rather one is a request and the other is an addition to something that is already mentioned above.
I think the idea pertaining to using the iphone’s innate sensors to trigger the camera is an amazing idea, but also maybe add the ability to set delays in microseconds (in order to shoot high-speed photography) such as water droplets, balloon’s popping, etc ?
The second request is to perhaps sell some hardware (eek, I realize that you guys are a software company) but perhaps a device that connects directly to the camera (something smaller than a computer) that could talk to the iPhone? … I know that I would buy it … the unfortunate tethering to the computer is really my only “gripe” about this thing … other requests are more of just wishes
Thank you guys so much for this app, it has made my life so much easier in so many ways … Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing what else you guys come up with.

Bracketing control has been mentioned a few times, but I’d just like to ask specifically for greater than 3-step bracketing, and the option for setting brackets to greater than one stop apart as well.
Looking forward to the Nikon support BTW (D3x please!), and the wifi/no host computer ability!

My priotized list of new features:
1) Focus control user adjustable or activation of liveview focus.
2) Exposure bracketing control with custom made presets.
3) Focus bracketing with custom made presets.
4) Combi focus/exposure bracketing possible with a usermade script.
5) direct camera connection without the pc. With either wifi grip or possibly cable or custom hardware.
Love the software so far.

I want to second this previous request:
“Use phone for sensors like sound, flash, motion, vibration: Add the ability to set camera triggering based on sound, changes in light or vibration using the iPhone’s built-in sensors.”
Not only is this a useful and wanted feature that will generate much buzz and great fame and fortune for onOne but it will also put you way ahead of the pack. The “pack” is soon to include Epson’s Pxxxx viewers which will directly link to and control some DSLRs (limited features).
Think about the creative possibilities of the iPhone as a triggering device.

This iPhone remote would be a wonderful addition to my photography tools. I really would like to see this tool work with the Olympus E-3. It would be a great studio tool and I also see some great uses in the field. I know that the number of Olympus DSLR are a small compared to Canon and Nikon, but like me some of us are just diehards to a great company and Olympus has always produced innovated cameras with great optics. Just like I have own many Apple Computers dating back to the Apple II through the latest Macs.
So please move the Olympus DSLR high on your list of upgrades to this product.

May I add my request to those requesting a direct connection to the camera via cable or using two iPod/iPhone touch’s WIFI to make the connection. This is for those of us that shoot in locations where it is inconvenient to tether the camera to a computer.
An amazing app!

I would just like to add one more vote for supporting the Canon Powershot G10. I would replace my aging G6 in a heartbeat, but the G10’s lack of an articulated LCD display is a dealbreaker for me. The idea of remotely operating a digital camera from an iPhone or iPod Touch occurred to me about two months before you announced DSLR Camera Remote. Congratulations on your implementation of a terrific idea.

The one feature I think users almost were expecting (and I get it might be tricky) is control over the internet, so I can go to a port on my home router and use my camera from wherever I am. It would need decent security (SSL + a certificate might save a lot of typing). Anyway, just an idea for the future. Would be fun though.

I like the idea of using two iPod Touch/iPhones but unfortunately they don’t support USB Host mode as far as I know.
I would love to be able to show this app to my friends by using my iPod Touch. Maybe on the server screen the first thing on the list is “Demo” and by selecting that I could move to the other screens and make changes but nothing is really sent to the server. This way I could show off the great app to others when not in a working environment.

I would love to see a feature to allow the user at any point in iPhone/iTouch software to save the current settings (ISO, White Balance, Shutter Speed, etc.) to a user-definable name and then allow the user quickly access a list of saved settings and by selecting one, instantly change the camera settings to match.
This would be nice, especially in a studio environment where switching in full manual mode the f-stop and shutter speed would be much quicker along with giving the settings a meaningful name.
Also, and I don’t know if the software has this feature, but it would be really cool to allow the remote software to control an on-screen preview on the host computer. This way, the photographer could move about the subject and have a computer or larger monitor connected and swipe the iTouch/iPhone screen to navigate through pictures on the larger host monitor without having to leave the shooting area.

Can we PLEASE get auto focus for cameras without live view (i.e. Canon 5D) ?
Patrick Shipstad
September 2, 2009 at 2:13 pm
@Patrick Shipstad: If your lens is set to to AF when you press the Fire button, the camera will auto-focus the lens (or at least attempt to) before shooting. If that’s not happening it’s possible that you need to reset your custom AF button on the back of the camera.

I’d like to see a depth-of-field indicator for near and far focus for the current settings. On Nikon D lenses the focus distance from the lens may be accurate enough to do this automatically. The GUI should be just as you would see on a lens: two pointers on a distance scale for near and far and center one for set focus.
None of the iPhone DoF apps are both easy to use and useful. Most are neither. I’m waiting to see one that works like and LOOKS like an actual lens: scrolling “rings” left and right to set focal length, aperture, and distance (options for Canon or Nikon directions). Moving bars show near and far focus on distance scale but aux readouts or moving schematic show calculated distances more precisely.

The selection list of all the combinations of image quality and size is long and hard to parse. Consider something like this. A quick glance would tell you what you have or what you need to change. This would fit on a single page avoid the multi-page scrolling.
Select image type:
[ ] RAW
[ ] RAW + JPEG
[ ] JPEG
[ ] TIFF
Select size:
[ ] Small (Xpixels x Ypixels)
[ ] Medium (Xpixels x Ypixels)
[ ] Large (Xpixels x Ypixels)
Select JPEG quality: [inactive for RAW or TIFF]
[ ] Basic
[ ] Normal
[ ] Fine

On Camera file storage and not downloaded to computer.
This software is great, but is there a way that the files remain stored on the cameras flash cards and are not downloaded to the computer so that shooting of the next frame is not delayed by the download.
Ideally we just want our iphone to provide a live view and firing control but not have the image downloaded to the laptop so we can shoot hire burst rates with files remaining on the camera. D3x

I know you are busy with such a great line of products, but my new Canon 7d would love to go wireless as soon as you could muster.
Mark Daniels
October 12, 2009 at 2:24 pm
@Mark Daniels: Well, I don’t know if we can get you completely wireless with your 7D as you’ll still need some kind of connection between the camera and the computer running our DSLR Camera Remote server app. That connection could be a wireless file transmitter like this one from Canon for the 7D (which according to Amazon.com isn’t available yet) but you will need a connection.
As for supporting the 7D in general, we have to wait for Canon to update the SDK to add support for the 7D at which time we can get it on our schedule.
Best,
Mike

Hi, it would be nice to be able to set the intervalometer picture rate below 1 second.
Would be nice too the be able to set an “intervalometer duration”. For example, tell DSLR Remote to take pictures for a number seconds/minutes/hours at an interval of 1 picture every 1 seconds.
Thanks for this great product

Hi Mike,
What a wonderful piece of software you have there. Congrats.
I saw several posts about the possibility to do without the computer hooked up to the camera, but unfortunately you have not given an answer so far. I would love to have a cable hook-up in stead of the extra weight of a laptop.
If that is technically not possible, please let us know.
I have another request. I use a Canon 5D mark II almost exclusively for video. The best way to work with the camera and a must for focussing is an extra monitor. Of course I can use your software already to see what I am shooting on the iPhone, but again the computer gets in the way.
Would it be possible to make a simple app to use the iPhone/iPod Touch as a monitor only, using a cable? Is that technically possible?
For this feature alone I would gladly pay 20 dollars for an app.
Thanks,
Bart, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Would like to echo Bart’s request – the ability to connect the iPhone directly and remove the laptop from the equation would be fantastic! I’ve heard that this may not be technically possible, but if it was or some intermediate gadget could be made to allow it then I would gladly pay more than $20!

Would pay for this on Android. If you’ve been keeping you ear to the ground, you know Android is rapidly gaining some marketshare. I think you’ll end up porting it to Android anyway a few years from now, but you might as well not get caught flat-footed.

Hi Mike,
Can you please answer us whether it is technically possible to hook up the iPhone to a Canon 5D MarkII using a cable instead of wireless. And please let us know if you are planning to support this IF it is technically possible.
This feature would make many lives a lot easier. Even if it was just supporting liveview.
Thanks,
Bart.
Bart
November 18, 2009 at 1:22 pm
@Bart – I’m not an engineer, but I think that this might be technically possible IF the SDK’s from the camera manufacturers could run on the iPhone or iPod Touch operating systems. As it stands today as of this writing, they do not. They (the camera SDKs) only run on a Mac or Windows computer. Enter the DSLR Camera Remote Server which runs on your laptop or desktop.
The iPhone/iPod Touch app talks to the server which then talks to the camera.
I agree, connecting directly to the camera would make things a lot better/easier for everybody (including me) and I’d love to see this happen some day. I just don’t know when or if it will.
Thanks,
Mike

One feature I’d really appreciate (which may already be in there, I just couldn’t find it) is the ability to review images when using live view. Without live view switched on you can swipe the display to review images you’ve already taken. With live view switched on swiping the screen auto-focuses.
It’s a pain having to switch live view off to review images, and the photo is only displayed for a few seconds after being taken which isn’t really long enough to check it properly.

If we’re adding manufacturer support requests, I have to add Panasonic/Lumix – this device would be superb with the amazing GH1.

I would love to see support for the Nikon Coolpix L100. I don’t even know if that’s possible as Nikon doesn’t even make a regular remote for it. It would certainly make you a hero among those of us that are new to digital photography.

Please build in follow focus support where we can set focus points and speeds and have the lens move between them. I know if can be done people are already building software to do it. Why buy an expensive follow focus if you don’t need to.
Key Features:
1) Calibrate Lens and store calibration
2) multiple Focus point presets (distance + speed ) – push the preset button to change focus
3) manual slider with the ability to refine the slider like manually slide between 2 defined focus points.
4) maybe store aperture, shutter and iso snapshots per focus point w/tweening between
5) direct iphone/itouch plugin to camera
6) iphone to iphone wireless
7) Realtime communication

I have used DSLR Camera Remote on my iphone and love it! The iphone is a nice phone but AT&T coverage has let me down more than once. For that reason I am sorry I jumped from Verizon. Please tell me DSLR Camera Remote will eventually be ported to Android to give users a greater choice in phones. (Not to mention that it will increase On1’s potential market).

I would definitely buy the pro version if it existed for the Blackberry Storm. Not sure how easy this would be to port over to the other environment, but you would definitely have me as a customer.

Add me for the fascination of being able to control the Nikon directly from the Iphone with absolutely no in-between.
What a ground-breaking product that would be…. to finally be able to manually set exposure, aperature, etc, directly from a remote device and not have to touch the bloody camera.

FIRE BUTTON: I’d like to be able to turn off the auto-rotate screen function. Sometimes when I’m shooting and I have my finger near the FIRE button, the screen rotates if I move the iPhone and the button moves. This makes is very difficult when shooting self portraits. Or maybe you could keep the button in one place (lower right corner) regardless of the screen’s orientation.
ZOOM/PAN: I’d like to pan across a photo that I’ve zoomed to check sharpness. Quite often the area of the photo I need to see cannot be seen at 1:1 zoom, rendering the zoom useless. In fact, I’d say without being able to pan across a zoomed photo, the 1:1 zoom feature is only about 5% useful to me. The spot I need to see is never where I can see it.
Wonderful app and I love it and use it all the time!!

Hi, that’s an great project. Will you support windows mobile also. I’ve board an HTC HD2 and it would be fine to have such a software for my phone also.
Is there a possibility to work without an PC, directly with a Wifi sender connected at the SLR camara? I saw some in the net, but without phone connection.

Any chance that may be in the works?

1 – I would also like the DSLR phone app to be able to add common “IPTC” (or metadata) information (like Caption, Keywords, Contact Email(s) and Rights Usage Terms) to photos as they are downloaded. Which would Reduce time and improve accuracy when captioning files. Basically have the fields pre-filled in before the shoot and when the images are captured the app adds the iptc info. – If I am wishing then I would ask to have the ability to have more then one set of preset iptc info sets stored. So for instance, if I shoot on a regular basis 10 different events that I know have the same iptc info. Then it would be nice to store these 10 differnt iptc info sets and label them for future use. So when I am at an event I can just click on the iptc info set and have it load be ready for images.
2 – Perhaps this has been mentioned – but I wold like to be able to select an image from the DSLR phone app -to have the image sent via ftp or email to a website either through wifi or through the phones data plan. Obviously I would want this to happen after the iptc info is in place – as requested above. Perhaps a transmit photos menu could be added.
It would also be nice then to have the option in place that the app automatically send images without waiting for user intervention. i.e. : send photos immediately via ftp / email
3 – The ability to create custom file names automatically. So for instance the app will automatically rename the image files to a predetermined name – then use numbers after to create unique files – for example the pre-defined name: wedding
so the first photo labeled by the app would be – wedding1, then the next image named would be wedding2 followed by wedding 3 etc.
Obviously I would also want this feature to run before the image is sent via ftp or email.
4 – I would like the DSLR phone app to add basic image manipulation controls – i.e.
crop , rotate image and save file and save file as -(for sure crop and save file – I could live without rotate image)
Thank you
Tim

Mike,
The software would be an amazing tool to have in my kit. Could you comment on your current position regarding the short/long term likelihood of an Android version being developed/released? If Android continues its overall U.S. market share ascension at current pace as all indicators suggest, this product(in current Apple-only support) will be missing a huge slice of photographers. Your requests for Android-support just in this list suggest the trend is underway. I know somebody will develop a similar product for Android in the near future and I don’t care who does it. However, he who does will have my money, and I’m really itching to pay someone…Please take my money!!!

Would love to AEB more then 3 Shoots for HDR.
Please tether the iPhone to my Canon 5D for HDR. I can’t be carrying my laptop everywhere.
Your software is awesome compared to http://promotesystems.com/products/Promote-Control.html which is at $299
I’ll take your $20 iPhone app and $20 OnOne iPhone to mini-USB cable and have it tethered to my 5D in a heart beat.
also, a mirror-lock up option or have the software know that my custom configuration has mirror lock up turned on.
