Genuine Fractals 5 - Real World Review

I just ran across several blog posts by Ralph Nordstrom describing his recent experiences with Genuine Fractals 5.

Take a look at Ralph's blog for the 4 articles. He describes his workflow incluing noise reduction using Noiseware Professional (a product I also use) and Pixel Genius' PhotoKit Sharpener in conjunction with Genuine Fractals to enlarge older files from his 6 mega pixel Canon 10D.

Here are the links.

Genuine Fractals and Liquid Resize

You may have seen our press announcement yesterday about our acquisition of the Liquid Resize technology developed by Austrian developer Sabet Ramin which as in turn based on the paper issued at Siggraph 2007.

I've gotten a few emails and phone calls since then asking what impact this will have on Genuine Fractals. The short answer is that this won't have an impact on Genuine Fractals.

Here's the longer answer...

The two technologies, while both involve resizing, are quite different.

Genuine Fractals is designed for those who want to increase the size of a file to get a higher resolution file for printing purposes and to maintain the aspect ratio of the original file.

The technology in Liquid Resize, on the other hand is meant for when you want to resize a digital image and change the aspect ratio of the image, but not distort the image. I'll post some examples of Liquid Resize in the next couple of days, but in the meantime, I hope this answers the question for most people.

The podcast for the interview I did on Photo Talk Radio last weekend is now live. If you're interested, please visit their site and have a listen.

Photo Talk Radio

I just finished up with my first LIVE radio interview with Howard Lipin and Mike Garcia over at Photo Talk Radio.

In the past, internet radio interviews that I've done were always recorded and turned into podcasts, but this was my first one that was live. I'm glad I didn't tell the guys in the office or my family as I'm sure they would have called in and heckled me.

Thanks again to Howard and Mike for having me on this morning!

Genuine Fractals 5 - Texture Controls

Perhaps one of the coolest new features in Genuine Fractals 5 is that now, for the first time ever, you now have access to some of the key variables in the Genuine Fractals scaling/enlarging algorithm.

The two algorithm variables that may be adjusted are called Amount and Threshold. The default settings are 3 and 25 respectively and will give you results equivalent to what you would have seen in Genuine Fractals 4.1.

However, in Genuine Fractals 5, adjusting these variables can provide improved detail in non edge regions as well as control edge sharpness. Below is a description of each control and recommendations of how to use them.

Amount: This controls the amount of detail in flat, non-edge areas of an image. If your image contains lots of minute detail that does not have defined edges (many organic patterns like leaves, rock, bark; or man made pattens like fabric) it may be good to increase the Gain to a setting of 4 or 5. Settings beyond 5 will often introduce a bumpy noise pattern which may be undesirable unless your original image was from scanned film. Settings lower than the default setting of 3 are useful for images with large areas of continuous tone that have no appreciable detail (sand, snow, sky) but have hard edged foreground subjects such as landscape images, architecture or portraiture.

Threshold: This controls the amount of hard edge detail that is enhanced. The default setting is 25. Decreasing the threshold will focus the algorithms only on edge information. This may be useful for portraiture or for reducing noise in your image. Settings higher than 25 will increase the amount of small detail in flatter areas of the image. Settings as high as 100 are useful for highly detailed images such as hair or feathers.

Please note, this is an update of an earlier post. I wanted to update it because we've changed the names of the controls and wanted to avoid any confusion if someone read the earlier post.

Mentioned on Macworld.com

James Dempsey over at Macworld.com did a nice write up today (or was it yesterday - why am I up so late?) about plug-in updates for the Adobe CS3 apps.

James mentions a handful of plug-ins and their CS3 savvy status for InDesign CS3, Illustrator CS3 and of course, Photoshop CS3. He also mentions the status of some font management apps including Extensis' Suitcase.

Being from onOne, I was especially happy to read James' comments on our plug-ins.

"I consider all four of OnOne’s Photoshop plug-ins to be the best on the market for what they do."

Thanks James! It's always nice to hear those kind of words. We work hard to deliver great products to users and we appreciate the mention!

Photoshop World Day 1 Recap

Yesterday was the first day of the 2007 Photoshop World Boston Conference & Expo and what a great day it was. It all started off with Johnny L from Adobe mentioning onOne Software in the Keynote, which was unexpected from us, but tremendously appreciated and exciting.

When the Expo opened, there was a rush of people who at first flew right past our booth and flocked to the Lynda.com booth (I still need to find out what that was all about), but shortly thereafter, we were busy talking to people and it never let up. A big thank you to all of you who stopped by our booth to say hello, ask questions and purchase products. I really enjoy these shows and seeing people get excited about our products and that's what keeps us going and dedicated to building great products.

One of the highlights of my day yesterday was spending about 20 minutes with Vincent Versace before the Expo opened. He showed me aboug 15 prints that he had done for his Black and White Conversion class. Vincent recently converted one of his 5 mega pixel DSLR cameras to a dedicated Infrared camera. If you know Vincent, you know that he likes Genuine Fractals to increase the size of his 5 mega pixel files large enough to be printed at 36" x 44". The prints were amazing. He said he'll give me some of them, so we'll see what happens later today...

The second highlight came when Judy Morse, an attendee & photographer stopped by our booth and rightfully shared with me that earlier in the day she received the Vincent Versace Award for her photo titled "Molokai Infrared". You can see the photo on the Photoshop World Guru Awards page. The thing that Judy wanted to tell me was that she used one of the frames from PhotoFrame Pro to finish off the picture. Looks to me like one of the vignette frames. Nice job Judy! Congratulations!

Update: onOne Software & Photoshop CS3 compatibility

Picture%204.png
If you're going to be upgrading to Photoshop CS3 this Spring and are wondering what onOne Software has planned in terms of updates and compatibility and such, here's a recap of what we plan on doing and how it will affect you.

Back in December 2006 (which seems like forever ago already) we announced our plans for Photoshop CS3 compatibility which included making free (via download) updates available for PhotoFrame Pro 3, Intellihance Pro 4 and Mask Pro 4. If you are a registered user of any of those products, you should be receiving an email from us alerting you to the availability along with a download link to get the update installers. If you are not registered, you can so at our online registration page. If you don't get the email for some reason, just give us a call at 888-968-1468 and we'll get you the download links.

For Genuine Fractals, it's a little different. We announced Genuine Fractals 5 in December as well and have stated that anyone who purchases Genuine Fractals 4.1 (standard or Print Pro) as a new purchase or as an upgrade, will get Genuine Fractals 5.0 for free via download when it ships this Spring. Upgrade pricing will be available for those who do not qualify for the free upgrade.

For those of you participating in the Photoshop CS3 public beta, you can download beta versions of Genuine Fractals 5, Mask Pro 4.1 and PhotoFrame Pro 3.1 to use. Please note Mask Pro 4.1 and PhotoFrame Pro 3.1 will require that you have full versions (not demo versions) of Mask Pro 4.0 and PhotoFrame Pro 3.0 installed already. The Genuine Fractals 5 beta does not have this same requirement but does have a timeout date.

Genuine Fractals 5.0 Public Beta

We are very excited today to announce the availability of Genuine Fractals 5.0 Public Beta. This is a great new release and we're happy to share it with you before it is actually 100% complete. Keep in mind that this is not the final release candidate, things will change (including a lot of further refinement to the user interface) between now and the final release date.

That being said, go over to our main beta site to login and download the beta. You'll need to create an account to login, so be sure to do that as well if you haven't already.

Up-Rezzing with Genuine Fractals

splash_cover.jpg

If you're a subscriber to Digital Photo Pro magazine, you'll find in the January/February 2007 issue a story on up-rezzing your images in Photoshop. It's one of the better articles I've read and talks about the 10-percent step method as well as Adobe Camera Raw's upsampling method. Perhaps though, and selfishly so, my favorite part of the article is when it talks about Genuine Fractals. Be sure to read the article in your monthly subscription or go pick up a copy on the newsstands!

Painter IX and Genuine Fractals 4.1

Metromac.org has posted a review of Corel's Painter IX and they have included how they have incorporated using Genuine Fractals into their Painter IX workflow. Of course, it includes a trip to Photoshop, but for those of you using Painter IX and choosing to do your printing through Photoshop, I thought you might be interested in this article.

Enjoy.

onOne Software and Photoshop CS3

Another day, another announcement. Earlier today, we announced our plans for updating Mask Pro 4, Intellihance Pro 4 and PhotoFrame Pro 3 to be compatible with Photoshop CS3. Yesterday, we talked about our plans for Genuine Fractals.

If you're using Photoshop CS3 in it's public beta form on Mac OS X and want/need to use any of our plug-ins you'll have to run Photoshop CS3 under Rosetta (which pretty much defeats the purpose of the CS3 public beta) for the time being. Rest assured we're hard at work on making the Mac versions of our plug-ins Universal Binaries and plan to share more on that in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Genuine Fractals 5.0

As you may have already seen, today, we announced a new version of Genuine Fractals 5.0 which will be available in the spring of 2007 right around the time that Photoshop CS3 will be commercially (not in beta form) available.

Be sure to check back in the coming weeks as we'll post some screenshots and will have much more to talk about with this new version. For now, here's a quick recap of the new features you can expect to see in Genuine Fractals 5.0.

  • New User Interface & Photoshop CS3 Compatibility - In addition to being compatible with Photoshop CS3, Genuine Fractals 5 has been rewritten as a Universal Binary to be fully compatible with both PowerPC and Intel-based Macintosh computers. Genuine Fractals 5.0 will also have a brand-new user interface that streamlines the image scaling process.
  • Improved Scaling Algorithm - The patented scaling algorithm in Genuine Fractals has been improved to deliver even better results than before.
  • Improved Scaling Performance - Genuine Fractals 5.0 will fully support multi-processor computers such as dual processor and dual core computers as well as AltiVec and SSE acceleration to deliver superior scaling results faster than ever before.
  • Built-In Sharpening Controls - Genuine Fractals 5.0 will give users the option to add sharpening to a file during the scaling process. Users will have control over the amount of sharpening that is applied and get a preview of the sharpening results before the one step scaling and sharpening process.

  • Built-In Film Grain Controls - Genuine Fractals 5.0 will give users the option to add simulated film grain after a file has been scaled. Users will have control over the amount of film grain that is applied and get a preview of the results; and it can be combined with the new sharpening controls if desired.
  • Additional file format support - Genuine Fractals 5.0 will support 8-bit and 16-bit RGB and Grayscale images. Genuine Fractals Print Pro 5.0 will offer additional support for CMYK and LAB color modes.
  • Improved Batch Processing Support - Genuine Fractals 5.0 will offer improved batch processing support for scaling multiple files in one step.

160 Million Pixels

Seitz Phototechnik AG has an insane 160 megapixel camera that they are now taking reservations for. Worried about not having enough space on your CF or SD cards (or needing 100 more!)? Don't worry, they've set it up so you can transfer directly to a computer (like a Mac Mini) via gigabit ethernet like so:

Seitz-6x17-storage-device.jpg

And in case you're wondering what a 160 MP camera looks like, here's a picture from their site.

Seitz-6x17-handheld.jpg

I read this over on John Nack's blog and had to repost. Of course, this begs the question, spend $36,653 on this camera or $159.95 on Genuine Fractals? :-)

Big Files in Photoshop

Earlier today, I was asked to settle a dispute between two of my co-workers. They were talking about a recent conversation had with a customer and one said that they were scaling an image with Genuine Fractals that was 20 feet by 30 feet at 300 ppi. One of my co-workers didn't think that Photoshop would let you save a file that big. So I was asked who was right? There was a lunch on the line here afterall.

The answer is that if you're using Photoshop CS2, you can indeed create a file that is 20 feet by 30 feet at 300 ppi - In fact you could go bigger if you wanted as long as you turn on the preference to enable large document support (.PSB files) in Photoshop's preferences. Doing so, you can go up to 300,000 pixels by 300,000 pixels. At 300 ppi, that's 1,000 inches or 83 and some odd feet. That's pretty big indeed.

In earlier versions of Photoshop, you were limited to 30,000 pixels in height and width and at 300 ppi, that's only 100 inches (8.3 feet) so, in a sense, both of my esteemed colleagues were correct depending on the version of Photoshop they were referring to.

So who should get the lunch? If you ask me...well, me. :-)

If you want to turn on PSB support, just go to your Photoshop Preferences and check the box to enable the large document format (see screenshot below).

Thank You Zazzu

There really is an art to printing. Don't let anyone ever tell you different. As proof, I offer up Zazzu. Mark Jaress runs this Fine Art Printmaking shop and he is truly at the top of his game. Mark has a long history dating back to the origins of Genuine Fractals and I recently had the pleasure of meeting him (via email & phone only unfortunately). He now runs Zazzu which does large format printing and some other really cool work.

Anyway, we asked Mark to do some large 36" x 44" prints for us for the upcoming Photoshop World Miami show. We just received them this morning and they are amazing. Granted, we're fortunate enough to be working with some very talented photographers, but the prints were amazing.

Great prints. Great service (the prints were packed very nicely). And a very fair price. If you need a large format print, look no farther than Zazzu.

Gathering Calm

Long-time Genuine Fractals user and Hasselblad Master Photographer Elizabeth Carmel has a solo show in Seattle, WA right now entitled "Gathering Calm". The show runs from December 1, 2005 through January 2006.

I met Elizabeth at the Photoshop World Conference in Boston in October of this year and she's a truly talented photographer and Photoshop user. She was telling me that she shoots with a 22 megapixel digital back as part of her Hasselblad system and she still uses Genuine Fractals to scale up her photos in Photoshop!

So if you live in the Seattle area or will be travelling there this Holiday Season, stop by Wall Space in downtown Seattle to see her exhibit. I've added a picture below to show a sample of her work. She's even had one of her prints included in the permanent exhibit with the Simthsonian Institute.
