DSLR Camera Remote 1.3 on the iPad

Ever since the iPad was announced, we’ve had dozens of photographers ask us if:

  1. DSLR Camera Remote will run on the iPad; and
  2. Will this will finally let them directly control their camera using our app from the iPad without a computer in between the two

The answer is Yes for number 1 and No for number 2. Here’s why.

DSLR Camera Remote 1.3 Now Available

Apple’s iTunes App Store team approved version 1.3 of our DSLR Camera Remote app for the iPhone and iPod Touch this week and both versions (Lite and Professional) are now available as free updates within the iTunes App Store. You can get the update manually from your iPhone or iPod Touch by going to App Store and then tapping on Updates and then on DSLR Camera Remote.

The 1.3 update adds support for the following cameras:

  • Nikon D3s
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • Canon EOS 1D MK IV

Additionally, version 1.3 includes some bug fixes including:

  • Improved logging to aid in troubleshooting network connectivity issues
  • Improved compatibility with the Canon EOS Rebel T1i
  • Improved compatibility with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
  • Simplified using multiple options simultaneously

Please note, this new version 1.3 requires that you download version 1.3 of the DSLR Camera Remote Server as well. The DSLR Camera Remote Server is a free download available on our downloads page.

DSLR Camera Remote v1.2 now available

I was out last week in New York for the PhotoPlus Expo conference when I got the note that version 1.2 of our DSLR Camera Remote application for the iPhone and iPod Touch was approved by the Apple iTunes App Store staff. Many of the benefits in this 1.2 update were rolled out as part of the 1.2 update the DSLR Camera Remote Server that was released earlier this month. But you will still want to get the free update to version 1.2 on your iPhone/iPod Touch as it does address some better handling of error messages as well as some general stability fixes.

To get the update, go to your iTunes store or on your iPhone or iPod Touch, choose the App Store application, click on Updates and find DSLR Camera Remote.

Cameras supported in upcoming DSLR Camera Remote v1.1

It’s taking a little longer than we had thought and hoped, but we’re nearing the end of development for version 1.1 of our DSLR Camera Remote app for the iPhone. We’re fixing bugs right now and the plan is to get the app submitted to the iTunes App store early next week.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know the final and official list of DSLR cameras supported in the 1.1 release, so here’s the list broken down by camera manufacturer. You’ll note some supported features such as LiveView, Bulb Mode and Burst Mode are listed per camera as well. You’ll see quickly that not all features are available on all cameras. This is due to a lack of support in the camera manufacturer’s SDK or a physical limitation in the camera itself.

The final feature list will be posted next.

DSLR Camera Remote v1.1 Update

Good morning. I’ve been out traveling for work for the past week and haven’t had much chance to write here. There have been a lot of questions coming in to me via the comments, the contact form and via Twitter so I figured I should post a quick status update.

The 1.1 update to our DSLR Camera Remote app for the iPhone is not yet completed. We haven’t slowed down working on it and we won’t until it’s completed. We’re estimating 2 more days of testing and bug fixing before we submit it to the iTunes App Store which means it should be submitted this week if we don’t find any other show-stopping bugs. For those of you who have read Rob Galbraith’s review of a pre-release beta version of the upcoming 1.1 update, please note that it is just that. A pre-release beta. As such, if you’re looking for it on our website or in the iTunes App Store, you’re not going to find it because we haven’t finalized it yet.

I suspect many of you are asking “What’s been slowing you guys down from your previous mid-July release statement?” The answer is that we’re working with two completely different software development kits (SDKs) that each have their own nuances. Whenever we implement a new feature for one camera platform (Canon for example), we have to start over on the second camera platform (Nikon for example). Some of the code can be copied & pasted, but not all. Add in that for each different camera body, each SDK treats each camera a little bit differently so a feature we implement might work on several of the cameras, but not on another and we have to stop and figure that out. I’m not making any excuses, just providing some context.

I’m pretty sure that you would agree with us that it is better to wait a few extra days to get it right than to release it, have you get it and find that it’s not working and then make you wait to get another update. That doesn’t benefit anybody. It’s inefficient for us and extremely frustrating for you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I’ll be posting a complete list of the new features that have made it into version 1.1 later today.
